Where to buy Holy Communion dresses

I've been holding off buying DD anything for her Holy Communion but school have advised its likely to be held in June. I am unsure where to start looking for a dress. Everything that's come up on Google are boutiques and seem to be very over the top cost an absolute fortune. Does anyone have any recommendations where I can find a nice simple dress? I'm just outside Glasgow.

We bought our DDs from this website:

Our local shop is doing virtual sessions, for both dresses and kilt hire. They are not ridiculous prices like some of the Glasgow places. Which side of Glasgow are you as it might be accessible once the restrictions have been relaxed a bit.

Thanks so much everyone I'll have a look through those links later and I am near Renfrewshire if that helps.

Cakes seems to have it covered, if you don't mind second hand, have a look on Ebay. Sometimes people put things like this up for sale.

How exciting. I am sure you will find something.

If you do not want a fancy bridal sort of dress you might be able to find a simple Broderie anglaise or cotton or linen one.

If you have any friends or relatives who can sew that would be a lovely project. You can buy fabrics and patterns on-line.

We were notified yesterday of the date for DS's first communion. They are having them in small groups with only 4 family members per child to comply with social distancing guidelines. He wants to wear a kilt so we have a zom session on Saturday to get him sorted. I think it will be lovely and low key, fingers crossed for good weather so we can have some family round. I will report back on the zoom session!

@FlippingBottleFlippers We've not been given dates or number of people allowed to attend but I imagine it will be similar to you. I'm quite glad it's low key and I'm sure it will be a lovely day for them 😊

My mum hated those bride style first communion dresses and instead dressed me in a lovely white cotton dress with a delicate flower print from classic French brand Jacadi.

She braided the same type of flowers that were on the dress into my hair and combined the dress with white lace socks and white shoes.

Just an idea.

Jacardi do have a lovely simple white dress at the moment.

Sarah Louise manufacture a wide range of communion dresses. I was looking for a very simple dress for DD, but thought I'd try out local children's wear shop when I was passing. DD tried on Sarah Louise dress and I shed a tear Blush It was a very plain calf length dress. I didn't think I'd ever let her wear a typical communion dress, but it turns out they're not all hideous. Just bought some bridesmaids dresses from here but noticed holy communion dresses too.

I bought my daughter's from Monsoon

I found loads in charity shops. They get worn once, and are then put away, so tend to look brand new. I know this may not be easy with Covid restrictions, but you could look on line for second hand options.

I should say, I’m not Catholic, so perhaps am a little more lackadaisical in my approach to First Holy Communion.

I0NA · 03/04/2021 15:46

Have you checked that they are allowed to dress up? Some priests now insist on school uniform to make it more inclusive and to focus more on the spiritual aspects.

When our priest held first communions a few at a time over a whole term people voted with their feet and went to another church. I can't see it going down well here, although I have heard of school uniforms being worn, and understand why priests make the request.

The message we were given was its up to the parents how they want to dress their child. DD is at a new school so I don't know anyone to ask what others are doing but I assume everyone is wearing communion dresses. I appreciate all the suggestions as I really hate the over the top dresses that look like bridal gowns. I was going to look for second hand because as PP mentioned the dress is worn once but its a massive deal to MIL that she has a new dress (MIL is paying for it as has paid for all her grandchildrens communion outfits)

I got my daughters from Carriages and Castles in Glasgow they had a lovely selection

Happylittlethoughts · 13/04/2021 10:00

Hey OP, I'm seeing quite a few on FB marketplace and I'm just over the water from you.
If I was going it again I'd consider to as an option. However, it turned out I was kinda fussy and each dress was totally different for my 2 girls.
I would not go near cream or ivory btw.
