John Lewis in Aberdeen

I’m genuinely surprised to hear that John Lewis in Aberdeen is closing, by best wishes go to anyone affected by this announcement.

I’ve always found the staff really helpful and knowledgeable whether in store or on the phone looking for items that are out of stock online.

Really hoping other stores stay open in Aberdeen!

Ruddy hell. Pentangle Grin

Was the Back Wynd shop Custard clothing?

RaraRachael · 26/03/2021 11:15

Whereabouts was Pentangle? I can definitely remember going there but not where it was. My favourite shop was Bruce Miller. We used to go and try out all the pianos, buy sheet music for our favourite songs and have something to eat in the restaurant.
I remember when the big four shops used to be Markies, Littlewoods, BHS and C and A. Although we were equidistant from Aberdeen and Inverness, we always used to come to Aberdeen as it had "the big 4". I still refer to that corner of Union Street as C and A's corner and remember my dad getting his suits from there for our weddings.

@Alittlebitofthis

There's not much decent shops left! They're putting a pound shop into the trinity centre where Waterstones was. There's quite a few on union street so I don't know why we're needing another one.
Good grief- has Waterstone's gone too?

When I lived in Aberdeen there was a big Waterstone's at the corner of Union Street and Union Row

Pentangle was in Chapel Street or thereabouts? Near Gerrard's restaurant.

E&M was lovely and there was also Watt & Grant.

I'm confusing Nova on Chapel Street with Pentangle. I see Nova is gone too.

MiniMork · 27/03/2021 02:21

As Pentangle Holborn Street?

It’s shite.

I’m so angry about it and what it’s become. It’s just been hit with the oil decline and now covid.

I did ALL of my Christmas shopping in Aberdeen last year, most of it between JL and Debenhams. (I hate shopping online and particularly at Christmas.) I just am a bit old school and much prefer the experience of the high street.

Hopefully when things come back small independents will have a chance in a way they didn’t before. But I know the rent is astronomical.

It’s all so sad. Such a beautiful city.

And while we are on it, who remembers Lee Louise?

So sad to hear of the closure of JL, it feels like the end of an era of department stores in Aberdeen. I hoped too if they made one floor into Waitrose if that would help. I think it's the food hall that's carried M&S.

I also remember E&M, Nova, Pentangle and Aberdeen was always heaving on a Saturday. It was such a lovely city and had started to recover after the oil and gas downturn and then Covid/lockdowns hit. Was the JL store one of the poorest performing?

This is really sad, we used to go to Aberdeen from the highlands (oooh! the big city!) to BHS, Habitat and C&A. I think I'd be really sad to go back now, I can't imagine how it's changed.

I did like the daffodils in and around Duthie Park at this time of year though, they were lovely
