Holiday Accommodation Edinburgh

Can anyone advise on where is good to stay for visiting Edinburgh for a few days in July. Will have a 3 year old and 7 year old.

Was thinking booking Seaton Sands caravan park and then driving into Edinburgh. Is that a good idea or is there somewhere more central. Don't really want a hotel a want a separate room for the kids so we can relax in the evening once they are in bed.

You don't want to drive in Edinburgh, parking is an expensive nightmare!
If you stayed at Seaton Sands you could get the 26 bus in that stops outside but I dread to think how long it takes from there. Or, you'd probably be better driving to Longniddry station, or Wallyford has large car park and taking the train in.
I've read mixed about Seaton Sands and it attracting a "certain type" of people so I'm not sure if I'd want to stay there. If you want to do the main sightseeing attractions in the city centre then I would stay in the city centre. There's a number of serviced apartments which have separate bedrooms and kitchen facilities so you're not tied to eating out and the kids can go to bed earlier. If you're travelling by car make sure you get something with parking as all central areas the on-street parking is resident's permit / short stay pay & display.
Knight's Residence has very good reviews and has the advantage of private parking but it's probably a lot more expensive than a caravan at Seaton sands!
Or AirBnB?

Take a bus! You'll never get parked in town.

emmathedilemma · 23/03/2021 09:44

It's the best part of an hour from Seton Sands into the city centre on the 26 bus, the train would be 10-12 minutes from Wallyford.

Seton Sands is rough. But to answer your question, parking in town is both a nightmare and ££££££. You'd be far better to drive up to Wallyford and jump on the train from there, it's about 7 minutes. The youngest DC will be free, the second DC will travel for £1 if you buy an adult cheap day return.

Edinburgh is brilliant and loads for kids to do, Covid allowing. And Seton Sands is just across a (busy) road from a lovely beach.

HoldontoOneMoreDay · 23/03/2021 09:49

There are millions of Air BnB's in the city, if you stay in the city centre you won't need a car at all.

Apartments on booking.com too - two bedrooms can be much cheaper than hotels plus you get kitchen & living spaces

Don’t do seaton sands it is charmless, rough too
Parking, is torturous so use public transport. Plenty air b&b in town
Crammond is really nice

emmathedilemma · 23/03/2021 12:39

Mortonhall campsite would be nicer if you want a caravan type site. It's still quite a bus ride into the city centre though. www.meadowhead.co.uk/parks/mortonhall/accommodation/holiday-home-hire/

idontlikealdi · 23/03/2021 12:40

Its rough.

Don't drive in - traffic and parking are horrendous.

museumum · 23/03/2021 12:43

Mortonhall campsite is lovely and the bus really doesn't take long into the centre and it's an interesting ride. Obviously no beach right there but it's easy to drive to E Lothian beaches from Mortonhall as it's just off the bypass.

DisappointingAvocado · 23/03/2021 12:48

Decide if you want a beach holiday or a city holiday, I wouldn't try and do both (or look for an apartment in Portobello if you do want both). Don't use Seton Sands as a base to explore Edinburgh, it's a pain to travel in. Lots of AirBnBs in the city itself or Mortonhall campsite would be preferable as mentioned above.

angelopal · 23/03/2021 13:24

Thanks for the replies. Thought Edinburgh centre would be more expensive than it is to stay in.

Don't need a beach. We have one at home already. Just thought it would be a cheap place for a few days. Going to book an apartment in the city centre.

I reiterate.....make sure a city centre apartment has parking if you're coming by car!

angelopal · 24/03/2021 07:11

Parking is top of the list of requirements.

@angelopal

Parking is top of the list of requirements.
Yeah, city centre AirB&B/apartments might not provide that. I can't think of many that might have it. Some hotels do but it's an extra £££. What you could do is a get an AirB&B off one of the bus routes and that might be more likely to have parking. You can get a family pass for the bus and use that to get into town.
gingercat02 · 24/03/2021 08:12

We have stayed in apartments with parking in Edinburgh many times often off Elm Row which is walkable to all the Central stuff but you still have access to the car if you want to go further afield. I can't remember the names unfortunately

WaxOnFeckOff · 24/03/2021 08:27

We had an apartment booked in York place, it didn't have parking but had a deal going with a local car park. It was April and has been cancelled.

What we usually do is park on the West of the city near my mums house and go in by tram.

It might be worth looking at stuff out that direction as it's obviously pretty quick to get into town and the trams were very frequent.

emmathedilemma · 24/03/2021 08:45

If you can't get somewhere with parking then you can park overnight for free at most of the park & ride car parks on the outskirts of the city if you're not going to need the car during your stay. The only one you can't park overnight at is ingliston by the airport.
