Weed smoking neighbours- what can we do?

Firstly, I have no issue with what anyone chooses to smoke! As long as it doesn’t impact anyone else then there is no issue.

Live in a duplex flat with one other neighbour. Shops below us. Us and one neighbour share a close. Separate gardens. The DDs of the family next door smoke weed everyday. I’ve had numerous conversations with the parents because the smell is travelling right through our house. They either smoke in their upstairs with the velux window open...which is right next to our velux and the smell just travels in and through the house (we have all windows closed). Or they smoke at the back door of the shared close, completely filling the close with smoke and it travels in to our flat.
I was pregnant last year and had to go to them numerous times with the issue. Had stopped for a couple of months but here I am tonight moving my baby and I into our spare room as my bedroom smells of weed again 😡

Is there anything we can do about this issue? Talking to them clearly isn’t working. Surely it becomes an issue when we have a baby in the house and it’s involving a shares access? Or is it up to me to ensure the smell can’t travel in?

Do you both rent? If so you can raise it with landlords and environmental health who might do an air quality monitoring check. The do have a duty to investigate it.

Keep a log of each time it happens, dates/time and each time you've spoken to them.

If you're owners then you'll need to seek legal advice if talking to them hasn't worked.

@Invisimamma Yeah I thought that was the case!! Both owners unfortunately 🙄 Have raised the issue again with the mum when I seen her yesterday (says she’ll talk to the DDs again 🙄)

New tenants moved in next door. They're smoking whatever form of Cannabis, (I don't know specifically what or the difference) several times throughout the day into the late hours of the night DAILY.

These are terraced housing where the attic spaces are not fully sealed from another. So the smell is working it's way over to my side. I can't stand the stench, makes me feel sick and gives me headaches. I also have a young son.

Previous tenants were all smokers with one doing weed occasionally but they'd all smoked it on the front porch or garden, which was never an issue and I could never smell it coming over to my side.

We're both in private renting so I can't raise the issue with our local Council. They're not students so I couldn't contact their university like some friends suggested. Initially I took the polite approach and had a word with the lad who answered the door, said he'd let his housemate know. I said I didn't have an issue with what others do within their home as long as it doesn't affect others. Even mentioned what the previous tenants did, either smoke it outside or within a well ventilated room etc.

Next day, they just carried on regardless so I contacted the landlord who said he has a no smoking policy. I said they're breaching it then but his attitude seemed like he's not that bothered or invested to do anything about it. I'd been messaging him each time it was happening and and he contacted them but said the tenants claimed/lied they were smoking it outside/they were out.

So I made reports to the police about it and still awaiting for the neighborhood police department to contact me. I have tried knocking a second time only to be infuriatingly ignored.

Then it seemed to get a bit better, I wasn't sure if it was because they were smoking it out the back garden but I noticed the front upstairs bedroom window, they'd open the top bit as wide as it would go but how effective is that if the blackened vertical blinds they have are never opened and always stay closed flush against the window?! Unless there was a good breeze then the smell would be a lot less intrusive.

Why can't you contact the police as it's illegal?
