Just how bad is the rain in Argyll?

We're thinking of a move to Argyll and Bute, currently renting much further East. I know some parts of Argyll are drier than others and suffer less with midges. We've browsed houses in Tighnabruaich, Carrick Castle and up above Strachur. Anyone have any inside knowledge in whether any of those are especially wet/midgey?

We're aware of the ongoing issues at the rest and be thankful, fingers crossed it will be sorted (one day!)......

I went for a week last year. When it rained it RAINED!! But then it could have been like that in the east at the same time, maybe I just had a bad couple of days! I think moving east to west, you'll notice an increase in rainfall. Even working in Glasgow during the week I used to find it got a lot more drizzly rain than we do in Edinburgh.

Can vary within a couple of miles. I live in the northern rainshadow side of a mountain in north Argyll and it can be raining all day on our house... yet dry all day 10 miles away. But it general does rain a lot here. Far more than on the east coast.

Number of years ago my brother had his 1st teaching job in Lochgilphead. He said it rained every day from sept to Christmas! The summer was warmer though. He's from east coast.

JellyTeapot · 18/03/2021 14:05

I got married on a beach near Lochgilphead.

It rained.

hilbil21 · 18/03/2021 14:13

We are on the very edge of Argyll and Bute in Helensburgh. It does tend to rain quite a lot Smile

YouSingIt · 18/03/2021 14:32

Oh god, maybe we need to shelve that plan and stick to Perth & Kinross or even Stirling! Thanks everyone

It is wet... and yeah it really can rain every day for months... but...

That’s not constant rain, there’s a lot of days with a shower at some point but mostly dry.

Winter is pretty mild if you’re near the coast, so the winter rain is instead of snow and ice not as well as.

And spring/summer can be absolutely glorious - warm but not stifling, the odd bit of rain still so it rarely gets that unrelenting too dry way.

It’s really good weather for gardens and grass, lol, and it makes for really pretty coloured scenery.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 22/03/2021 21:36

It's very rainy, the midges are horrid, but it's beautiful.

randomsabreuse · 24/03/2021 10:40

Not in Argyll but I've noticed that the weather can be very localised.

I'm in Kirkintilloch (East side of East Dunbartonshire) and we have much brighter and drier weather than Bearsden and Milgnavie which are only 8 miles west. It's like our own microclimate... DH works in Bearsden and is often surprised by how little it's rained at home vs what he's seen at work!

applesandpears33 · 24/03/2021 10:55

I think it may be a lot drier in Kintyre. They don't have so many hills to attract the rain. It does take a lot longer to get there though.

Argyll is a truly beautiful place when it stops raining.

YouSingIt · 24/03/2021 10:59

Thanks everyone. It's the beauty v rain/midges issue that's so hard to call. Property is reasonably priced (presumably for weather and isolation reasons) and we could get something with fantastic views, far better than other areas. But....the thought of endless rain does worry me. Am definitely a fair weather walker!

OP posts:
hilbil21 · 24/03/2021 11:57

It's definitely not endless rain. Just a bit wetter than the east Grin

YouSingIt · 24/03/2021 12:00

What's the definition of 'a bit wetter' Grin

I got married on the shore of Loch Fyne. It rained.

hilbil21 · 24/03/2021 12:03

I don't think it's rained in Helensburgh this past week if that helps lol.

Musicaltheatremum · 24/03/2021 12:04

My daughter has just moved back to Edinburgh from down south. Last week when we had had rain, hail, wind, gales, hail and sunshine warm enough to sit out in all in one day she asked me what the problem was with the weather up here 🤣. I told her it was Scotland. It's part of its attraction. Edinburgh was 19 degrees last Thursday!
I would love to move to Argyll and Bute. It's beautiful.
There's no such thing as bad weather....just the wrong clothing.

weegiemum · 24/03/2021 12:06

My dh works in Argyll (we live in Glasgow) and yes, it's wet. He was working last weekend though, and it was gorgeous, and the view out of his office window is amazing - he's watching out for this years ducklings on the river and looking for the red squirrels!

Gorgeous part of the world.

hilbil21 · 24/03/2021 12:12

Not raining today! Smile

Just how bad is the rain in Argyll?
YouSingIt · 24/03/2021 13:38

Good point about Kintyre, although I guess the pay off is the distance to anywhere. We need to be within about 1hr 30 of the central belt

@hilbil21

Not raining today! Smile
And now it's torrential Grin
YouSingIt · 24/03/2021 16:36

Haha. We could probably have a weather thread updated hourly from Argyll Grin To be fair, it's raining (and sunny) in Perthshire. All depending on which window you look out of!

swiggless · 29/03/2021 10:34

It's been pouring for the last few days where I am in Argyll.

hilbil21 · 29/03/2021 10:41

Same here. It was my sons 6th birthday the other day and we got him a slide. It's rained ever since Grin

swiggless · 29/03/2021 17:28

Settled now but grey clouds. Even cloudy, it's beautiful Smile

WisnaeMe · 01/04/2021 03:38

the greener the grass the better the rain ☔️
