How many hours for Advanced Highers

Can anyone advise how much time 6th years spend in school for Advanced Highers? I have read some reports that it's only 3ish hours per subject so only 9 hours contact time for 3 advanced highers? Plus an hour or so of PE? Are they at home the rest of the time? Or do they stay in school for their study periods? And this varies from school to school - is that right?

Thanks!

Struggling to remember, but I'm sure it was maybe 3 double periods for each and no pe as it's not compulsory. DS had 2 of his AHs timetabled at the same time so had to alternate attending.

They don't need to be in school outside of classes (in our case anyway) but depending on where you live and how the timetable works out, it might be easier to stay and find somewhere to study in between.

In these covid times my dd has been home for her study periods. It depends how many AH they are doing too - my dd is doing 2 plus 1 higher.

She is timetabled for 6 hours of each subject per week and they are set out in double periods.

Dd does have a period of PE but as it is surrounded by study periods she has not gone in for them. Same with a period of guidance

3 double periods per subject here, same as Highers. However, few DC do 3 AHs, and everyone else is expected to do 4 subjects. The "5th subject" is taken up with citizenship / careers advice etc. The 3 AH students benefit from a subject's worth of study time. It is expected that this is done in school and the timetable is set up to prevent leaving early / coming in late (pre Covid at least).

Our school uses to have them in for study periods but with covid they can go home/stay home instead

My DS normal timetable had one hour of each AH every day. So 15 hours plus one hour of guidance each week.

5 x 50 min periods at our school.

Our school have recently required all S6s to arrive at normal time and stay in school until at least lunchtime even if they do have have timetabled subjects. They have to study in school if there are no timetabled lessons.

Generally speaking for a larger AH subject you are offered 5 x 50/55 lessons a week. Subjects with fewer students may only be offered 3 x lessons per week.

The remaining time was 2 x periods of voluntary teaching support/ committees etc. One period PSE.

AH is 3 double periods a week here (3 x 1hr 40min)
Plus once week PE and S6 programme (UCAS/personal statement/interview skills/ speaker on drugs, alcohol, finances etc)

Must be in every morning, can go home for study as long as that's them finished for day, can't go out and in.

ds has just picked his S6 choices - 2 x AH and 2 x H. If he chose 3 AH he would still have to pick a 4th subject which he felt was too much.

He has been told there are 6 periods timetabled for each AH but only 3 are contact periods and he is also allowed to drop one column for AH study. So he will have:

  • 18 periods contact teaching (12 for Higher and 6 for AH)
  • 12 periods for AH study
  • 1 period for PSE
  • 1 period for Duke of Edinburgh

There will also be other school activities going on for prefect/volunteering/projects/committee and hopefully personal statement support type things.

Not sure how the timetable will look, hopefully lots of double periods, he has said they have been told they need to stay in school for the whole school day.

Our school splits the S6 (and s5) timetable into 5 columns. 32 periods of 50 minutes a week. So S5 and S6 get 6 x 50 minutes (5 hours) per subject, whether that's higher or advanced higher, 1 period of PE and 1 of PSE.

S6 only are allowed to leave one column blank as study periods or free periods, but they don't have to if they don't want to. Most do, but that still means they are in 26 periods out of 32 a week, whatever they're studying.

Oh and agree that three advanced Highers is unusual. DS is doing 2 x Adv Higher, 1 Higher, and 1 Nat 5.

Ours have three double periods a week of each subject - doesn’t matter if it’s vocational , N5, H or AH.

Plus one of PHSE. No PE unless they chose it as a subject.

Up to 8 hours of private study per week.

They are strongly encouraged to do things like mentor a younger pupil, help with sports clubs, orchestra or choir or with school organised community projects.

They must do 4 or more subjects, unless they are doing 3 AH or 2 AH and one H . There’s a huge choice of subjects so it’s not hard to find one to suit.
