If your child is living away from home for University in Scotland, can you give me an idea of how much money you might give them a month. They wont qualify for Bursary and accommodation will be £3000 ish a year . So most of student loan goes there..
I know " pay what you can afford" but just looking for some kind of ballpark .

We paid accommodation and dd lived off student loan.

Mine is spoiled and gives me very little info. I pay his accommodation and give him £250 a month and he is supposed to be saving his loan. I have no idea if he is or not though. On top of that I pay his phone and pay other stuff from time to time. i.e. travel costs for coming home, new glasses etc. I kit him out with new clothes at Christmas and Birthdays.

Thank you for replying. I know how individual each situation is but that is helpful. We were thinking of paying accommodation and letting her manage with the loan of £4750.
It doesn't seem a lot for food, travel, books clothes, phone. Obviously she'll be trying to get a job ,but they may be scarce.
Just trying to organise my thoughts now.

How come your accommodation figure is so low? Most Halls of Residence that first years live in cost from £4,500 upwards? I think the problem for those entitled to the minimum is that the accommodation costs a lot more than the minimum loan of £4750.
This probably means you paying the accommodation and your DC living off the loan is probably a good idea. £4750/52 = £91. That should suffice for most for food etc providing the rent and bills are paid.

Dd used her loan to pay her accommodation the last 2.5 years. The first year we saw her a lot and gave her money here and there, but she had worked full time over summers to allow her to save for spending money. She also picked up a wee job that paid her socialising.

She's very savvy with money. Currently paying for a flat in Dundee while living with us due to our current situation but working full time in a care home. So she has around £1300 a month coming in.

wooliewoo · 07/03/2021 21:17

DDs halls take up the whole £4750 loan to pay for them. I give her £300 per month during term time to live off and she already had some money from a job. I also pay phone and any buy most clothes. Obviously this year this there has been very little in way of clubs, activities, pubs to spend money on.

Her accommodation will be at Stirling so prices vary but one Hall (at least) is 95 or 98 a week. It was just a single room, no en suite! So if she goes for that itll be around 3000.
I think she needs a job asap. We'll all start saving!

There will be a minimum number of weeks that you have to contract, that could be 38 - 44 depending on the halls, so around 4k based on your cost, ds had a similar room at Aberdeen which was just under £4300 for the year. You might need to check again.

Happylittlethoughts · 07/03/2021 21:42

Thank you you are right. I was just checking and realised I had based that on the 30 week (2 x Semesters) not including holiday weeks. I couldn't find details on how many weeks so that's helpful.
Recalculating route!

I know Stirling do run slightly different to a lot of other Unis in their terms so definitely worth checking. You usually have to pay for 3rd term as that's traditionally where they would be doing exams - obviously this year things are a little different and i'm not sure if they will be doing different contract dates for accommodation.

Dd has had the loan of £4750 each year and has managed to live quite comfortably off that.
She is now in her final year. Before first year she had worked most of the summer and had that money. She didn't manage to find paid work between first and second year but did find part time work between 2nd and third year.
We have paid for train tickets home and we have visited and taken her for lunch/coffee etc. Also family have sent cash for birthday/ Christmas.
We felt it would be good for her to learn to budget while knowing accommodation was paid for and we've been quite firm about not giving her any more. She is in Glasgow so accommodation was not cheap.

readsalotgirl63 · 07/03/2021 22:10

Did is now in a private flat and had become vigilant about switching lights off Grin
She also phoned in a state of outrage about the cost of Council Tax and very quickly returned the exemption claim form. Its been a useful life lesson!

We pay DS accommodation (around £5500) and he lives off the loan. We also pay his transport to and from Uni at the beginning and end of term (if we aren’t driving him) his phone, his contact lenses and I buy him an enormous amount of store cupboard stuff (including all his cleaning stuff and toiletries) so he only needs to buy fresh food for the full term. Reading this back I can see we probably spoil him 😁.

We give them £1100 a month
They don’t have loans
Granny gives them 100 a term
