Hi,

I'm looking at a job in Dunbar but I don't know the town at all and of course I can't visit at the moment!
Specifically I'm interested to know what the secondary schools are like, what the public transport links are like, and if there is much going on in the town (in normal times)

Thanks for your ideas !

Hello - we live near Dunbar and DD goes to Dunbar Grammar. It's a pretty good school with a decent reputation and good exam results, it had a nice new extension built last year too. Dunbar is a friendly town with a good community spirit. Transport is good - train to Edinburgh takes 25 mins and you are on the main line to London etc. also. Great beaches and countryside nearby. Property prices much cheaper than Edinburgh, but quite a lot of new builds have been put up in recent years which is great if you like them, not so much if you don't! Town is a nice mix of people and not as posh as North Berwick.

It's a nice little place and an advantage for me over North Berwick is that it's on the main Edinburgh - London train line. ok, not all trains stop there but it does give you that option whereas NB you have to go into Edinburgh and back out again.
Lothian buses have also expanded their services out into East Lothian for longer journeys.

I've only heard favourable things about the Grammar school and have met some really nice kids who've gone / go there.
It's got a leisure centre with pool, a big football / rugby sports centre at Halhill, a parkrun at Lochend Woods, several golf courses, loads of seaside walks and good cycling, Belhaven brewery just along the road, East Links farm park and Foxlake adventures on the doorstep......it's a very outdoorsy living sort of place, I'd happily live there!

Yes to Foxlake, my teen loves wakeboarding there! There's also Coast2Coast Surf School, lots of water sports there.

I live nearby and we did look at Dunbar when we moved, but it felt a bit to far out as we both work in central Edinburgh. The huge amount of new houses that have been built in recent years give real choice of size and price.

As PP said there is a train line but the car park is really small, although you can drive easily to other stations with bigger car parks nearer Edinburgh if you are going into the city. Also the express bus is ok but expensive I think.

There is only one secondary school - Dunbar Grammar, and also a single (very big) primary school that operates over 2 sites. It's big compared to other secondaries the area. I hear the pastoral care is very good and the head is quite young and has good ideas.

Loads of great beaches and woods for walking within 10 mins drive - Belhaven Bay is stunning.

The sports facilities are really superb - much better than in my town I have to say so if you have DCs who play football/rugby/hockey etc they will be well served. It has a single high street with a good range of shops - the community bakery is excellent.

I think if we were moving now, with more homeworking, I'd definitely put Dunbar higher up the list.
