Private schools in Glasgow

Snappyteabread · 16/02/2021 22:53

Trying to find information re private secondary schools in Glasgow. From real people with experience themselves or through friends. I can read the websites but figure it's better to try to get some insight. What has been your experiences? How are your children getting on? How do you compare what each school has to offer? If you have any links to recent threads, please can you post them.

Single sex, co-ed?

Just Glasgow? Or surrounding areas?

Where do you live? Glasgow is a big place and it takes a long time to cross the city.

Rhumba · 22/02/2021 16:31

What age is your child/ren and what facilities are important to you? Any particular strengths/interests/sports?

Don't want to say where I live but we'd be happy to travel for the right school so just wanting to find info about all the schools.

I have 2 children at Hutchie, reasonably happy with it but not ecstatic. Academically it's good, music is excellent, lots of subject choices, small class sizes. Sports is astonishingly bad for a private school, very disorganised, they take a lot of credit for kids doing sports in clubs outside school and then doing well in school's competitions ( eg kids training in athletics clubs unrelated to schools then winning school's championship) .
Communication with parents is not great. Some bullying problems with the teenage girls (maybe that's normal?)
School has done well to keep classes going during Covid. There was some dissatisfaction at no refund given on fees despite kids not being in school during Covid, eventually they gave a small refund.
In retrospect would I send kids there again - probably , not definitely. But we live in the Southside so convenience is a factor.

Thank you for this. Interesting feedback. Do you have any knowledge of any of the other Glasgow schools from any friends for example?

Also wondering what the entrance requirements were although I suppose only relevant if your kids joined in secondary as obviously would be totally different for primary age.

My DC went through from Primary 1 so no entrance requirements. Children joining for S1 sit an entrance exam, sorry no experience of it.
No experience of other Glasgow schools, I didn't go to school in Glasgow. Anecdotally High School seems to be better for sports.

Most people in Glasgow don't put their kids in private school. They spend the same money moving to the catchments of the best state schools (Jordanhill, St Ninians, Williamwood) so they can pat themselves on the back and say they're supporting the state school system.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 28/02/2021 00:18

Location matters because yiu need to factor in the time and traipse West end
Glasgow academy and Glasgow High
Both much of muchness, very similar. West end liberal typeseg ,lawyer, doctor parents.

Private schooling is contentious in Glasgow and it’s the minority, certainly when compared to Edinburgh . As a result it’s kind of understated and slightly apologetic undertaking

Hutchinson mixed reviews south side so you’d really need to live south of it’s a huge faff.

St Aloysius St Als in city centre , catholic (Jesuit) school so you’ll need to be comfortable with the religious emphasis. Great location near transport

I’d advise think about temperament of your child, what kind of family are you, factor in travel, Afterschool needs etc

lovablequalities · 28/02/2021 00:50

Glasgow Academy over Hutchie

Loads of very good state schools

St Al's is good

Jordanhill is good

Glasgow Gaelic school is good

Acovic · 28/02/2021 00:57

Kelvin Academy?

I have friend's with kids there - they like it.

Other Glasgow based friends have moved strategically for state school catchments.

And Mearns Castle is sought after in NM area as well.

Sadly moving doesn't come cheap and there are no guarantees of finding the right house at the right price and getting into the catchment school. So we are considering all options.

Does anyone have any more experiences of any of the Glasgow private schools to share?

I have friends with kids at Kelvinside Academy and Glasgow High. Both families happy. Kelvinside is very small though, so smaller pool for friends, sports teams etc. I think more options for subjects at High too.

IM0GEN · 15/03/2021 07:58

@FinnRussell - are you actually Finn Russell?

FinnRussell · 15/03/2021 08:00

No... finn Russell would not be up this early this morning is my guess
