Moving to Fife/Kinross

Hello, my partner and I are planning to move to Fife or Kinross. After a lot of research we have narrowed it down to Dalgety Bay or Kinross. We prefer the idea of Kinross as we have heard that the High School is good and we would like to keep DS in the same area after primary school and not move again. DH will be working in Edinburgh 3-4 days a week. Any opinions or experience on Dalgety Bay Primary, Kinross Primary or living in the area very welcome.

One thing about Kinross is that some 'local' services will be based in Perth. Your health authority will be Tayside so you might even have to go to Dundee or Stracathro for some things.
It isn't too far to drive really. Just a bit strange.

Kinross has no train station - that's a consideration if you, your DH or any kids want to travel. I think there's a decent bus service to Perth / Edinburgh.

I think Kinross is prettier & the school is better.

Dalgety bay is more of a commuter town with no real centre, but it has a direct rail link to Edinburgh. The school is Inverkeithing high which is due to be rebuilt near Rosyth.

I think both have a good sense of community though & I know people who happily live on in both.

Ps I think the commute could be a bit grim to Edinburgh from Kinross.

There are rail stations you'd have to drive to eg Inverkeithing, Lochgelly, Dunfermline Queen Margaret- but the latter have slow trains.

I'd rather gouge my eyes out than drive from Kinross to Edinburgh every day; the bridge commute is horrendous in non-covid times.

I don't know about schools but I'd second being near a station if regular commute to Edinburgh is needed.
At south end of bridge your DH will have to go through Barnton junction or Newbridge. In non-Covid times these are both a nightmare in rush hour! It's a real slog of a commute by road from Fife road unless he's a shift worker.

I agree the PP that if he's working a "9-5" type job and going into the city centre then he'd be better on the train. If he's not based in the city centre then driving might be the only option but be prepared for traffic. People I work with who commute from Fife aim to be on the bridge by 7 to miss the worst of it.

There are lots of people who live in Kinross who commute into Edinburgh - yes, early start needed but doable. Good sense of community, lots of varied activities for kids and good schools. Easy access to the north, south and west as right on the M90.

Thank you for all your replies, really helpful! He plans on driving and then taking the train to the centre of Edinburgh. It seems that although it’s not a great commute a lot of people do it. It would be interesting to hear some first-hand experience of the schools if anyone can help?

Hi I’ve sent you a PM

What would you like to know about Kinross? My kids are at school in both the primary and secondary? Also, my husband drives to Edinburgh for work daily.

Ccampbell3f1 · 09/12/2022 20:22

Hi! Aware this is a historic thread.. But I'm looking at moving from Edinburgh out to the "countryside".. Ideally a town with a community feel, good primary and secondary schools and commutable to Edinburgh (would need to go min 2 days per week 9-5 style)

Anyone made the move and happy to discuss pros/cons? DH needs persuading as is Edinburgh born and bred but I really find it is getting so busy here now and would like a slower/quieter pace of life for our kids (age 1 and 3)

Thanks for any advice!

Did you make the move? Considering similar and would love to know!
