Hi
Looking for recommendations of somewhere pretty/semi rural but commutable to Glasgow. I live in the city and would like to move to somewhere more green as my child starts school next year. I’m a single parent so I can’t afford anything too spectacular, 2 bedrooms, a dining kitchen and public room and/or study type could be manageable! Am keen to get a decent size garden which I know might be tricky given budgetary restraint. But some kind of outside space in a pretty environment would be nice. I’d also like somewhere friendly, maybe an artistic vibe too and somewhere that has a nice cafe or shops! Have been to Killearn which thought was very pretty. Kippen lovely too tho maybe slightly far out. I love Eaglesham tho not sure would get much on small budget. Have read a bit about Strathaven, is it easy to get to Glasgow from there? Any other suggestions welcome. Thanks

Look at Lanark and surrounding villages in the Clyde Valley. It's easy to get onto Motorway to Glasgow. Or if you want to look North of Glasgow, try Balloch and Loch Lomond if rural is what you are after.

Oh and yes, Strathaven is relatively easy to get to Glasgow from...it would be a short-ish drive to Hamilton to get on to the M74.

I'm not sure of your budget, but something like this? www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/99007259#/

Have a look at the rail network. See which places have stations and main lines to Glasgow. Falkirk may suit you. I say trains because even if you drive now, your child will grow up and having a train station nearby will be useful.

Great, thanks for suggestions. And for link to the Lanark property - that type of look is ideal, will investigate further!

Have to say I think the roads between Strathaven and M74 and Lanark and M74 are not brilliant especially in winter. Would second @Lizzies suggestion of considering places on rail network - good for older kids/teens to be a bit more independent.

Lanark and surrounding areas are lovely but like others have said, roads in winter aren't the best.
Also, although Lanark does have regular trains to Glasgow, it's always one of the first services to be cancelled. Not much fun being thrown off a train in Motherwell and getting home from there. Years of experience with that Angry

Depending on budget have a look at Houston and Bridge of Weir, good state schools, not too far from Glasgow

Sunnyside22 · 27/01/2021 20:27

Thanks for suggestions ladies, appreciate it. Winter trains not much fun in our country @ladylunchalot, agreed! And thanks @Applesky re suggestion of BoW and Houston, been ages since was there but recall it being very nice.
