Relocate to Dundee and primary schools suggestions

Hi all,
We are going to move to Dundee from London in summer. We have a 5 year-old child so I am looking for some information about the primary schools there. Also a nice place to rent nearby. I will have to commute to St Andrews for work, and husband needs to go own to London often, so ideally not too far from city centre. I have seen good and bad about west end area, and broughty ferry. I will be grateful for any comments regarding housing and schools. Thank you. Yvonne

Honestly? Of you are travelling daily to St. Andrews I would be looking at somewhere that side of the water. The bridge can be an absolute bastard in bad weather and also (trying not to word this insensitivity) it gets closed due to people threatening to jump/actually jumping off. Lots of people travel from the fife side to Dundee and vice versa but if it was a daily commute for me there is no way I would live at the 'wrong' side through choice.

Also, depending on how your DH will travel, fife may be better? Edinburgh airport is closer, although there is a flight to city airport from Dundee that could work. Train stops at Leuchars for London too.

Hi Smoothchange,

Thank you so much for the replies. I have no idea about the bridge issues. That's something I need to reconsider then. Is Cupar a better option?

Cupar is an ok area, lots of nice housing and 3 primary schools, the catholic school which takes non denominational kids and Castlehill which is a large primary school. The main high-school is in cupar bell baxter which has a catchment area of local villages from Falkland/ Strathmiglo to Balmullo/ Leuchars. Good rail links and shops and a small tesco and co op. There are also local villages which have nice, smaller schools. It depends what you are looking for. You could also look at St Andrews or the surrounding villages. There are a few primary schools, Lawhead, Greyfriars and Cannongate with Madras College as secondary. Also private Greyfriars school.
What are you looking for where you live? 👍

Hi,

Not sure if you have already made your decision but Cupar is great! Particularly for kids. Friend has kids at castlehill and they were v impressed with how the kids had been encouraged and pushed academically during the Covid Pandemic. It has nice green area to play around in (more than the primary schools I was used to!) I would also look at the extra-curricular clubs on offer in the cupar community for you and kids. For young kids there is Junior rugby, football and look up fife athletics club which has a super kids running/athletics/cross-country section (9 years upwards). East fife triathlon club also won club of the year for their junior section, tennis at Duffus park, Family friendly sailing club in nearby st Andrews. So lots of stuff in the community to keep them (and you!) busy if you are outdoorsy or into sport! CuparNow and sustainable cupar might give you more of an idea of all the stuff that's going on or going to restart..(it's so hard to move during a pandemic when nothing is open!) Good luck with your decision!!! I think cupar is great!
