Will takeaways be banned?

Nicola Sturgeon said on Friday that takeaways could be next to face restrictions. I wonder how likely this is as I suspect some key workers are relying on them at the moment. From a selfish point of view, I would be gutted, as our weekly takeaway is about the only thing I look forward to. Although I appreciate businesses may be putting their staff at unnecessary risk.

I wonder if they will limit it to takeaways doing “substantial meals” i.e. not takeaway coffees/ cakes where people are more inclined to consume as a picnic 🤷‍♀️

Mogwaimug · 10/01/2021 13:04

Noooooooo!!!

The only thing that got me through Friday WFH with two sick kids was the promise of gin fizz and dominos!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 10/01/2021 13:07

I'm hoping she meant collection from takeaways would be banned, but that delivery would be ok.

partyatthepalace · 10/01/2021 13:17

I think takeaways are safe! It's the only thing the restaurant trade has.

But she might be limited cues or maybe clamping down a bit on coffee shops that don't do proper food.

Groovee · 10/01/2021 13:30

I honestly hope not. It's what kept a number of businesses going last time round.

sleepyhead · 10/01/2021 13:34

I think it's a concern about people gathering outside coffee shops etc waiting for their orders. The ones I walk past have no social distancing and often customers are completely blocking the pavement.

Delivery doesnt have the same issues.

My heart breaks for those businesses though. Everything taken away from them.

Can’t see how this would make much difference
I think she just likes to be seen to be doing something
She has clearly shown she has no concerns for the hospitality business

Direwolfwrangler · 10/01/2021 13:40

Delivery only works for those living in a town or village. The places local to me which do takeaway are stringent about measures, proper queueing systems, sanitiser etc.

We really need to see some evidence about transmissions and stop constantly changing the measures. It’s impossible to know what is working.

RaspberryCoulis · 10/01/2021 13:44

It's a fucking joke if she does. The only reason some of the restaurants round here have survived is by changing their entire business model to offer meal kits, takeaway, home delivery.

Getting a drive thru McDonalds breakfast or a latte from Starbucks is not the main driver of this pandemic.

She will just be condemning thousands more people to the dole queues. Fucking ridiculous.

user1487194234 · 10/01/2021 13:56

I agree totally but she doesn’t seem to care
Definite puritanical element to it

WeAllHaveWings · 10/01/2021 14:51

Haven't heard that yet, but yesterday/today ds and I have a cold, dh is ok. It is just your common garden variety stuffy nose kind, usual glands swollen, no cough/temperature. I have no idea how we've caught a cold!

dh, ds and I have only left the house to walk the dog at nearby very quiet fields, we haven't seen anyone close up this year.

The only contact we have had are Tesco deliveries, Chinese food deliveries and postal deliveries (no parcels this week, just letters) - it must be one of us has caught the cold from one of them, can't think how else we could have! The Chinese food was amazing delivery was still close-ish contact as handing over cash/bag (we don't take any change back). dh is on handwashing overdrive again 🙄

OOAOML · 10/01/2021 16:34

Pub takeaways are a problem I think. I've stopped going to Tesco because I was fed up having to try and get past the pub's worth of customers (no social distancing and lots of shouting) covering the pavement outside the nearby pub. Whereas food takeaway places here seem to have good queue set ups.

Sofetikal · 12/01/2021 19:58

I got the impression today that we will hear tomorrow about some more restrictions on takeaway and click and collect services. I suppose these services require staff working in close proximity which could be a factor

Fortherosesjoni70 · 12/01/2021 21:37

She hinted at people actually physically going for take aways. I also think they are fine but delivery only.

TiredUselessHopeless · 13/01/2021 00:14

What happens to people who live too far for delivery? Why are people who live rurally constantly being punished!!

DumplingsAndStew · 13/01/2021 13:31

Yes, all those rural residents with big outdoor areas... "constantly being punished". Everyone is being restricted in some way; yours is that you'll have to wait in your car til your food is ready 🙄

TooTweeForMe · 13/01/2021 13:34

I should expect we see the numbers drop like a stone now people can't go into a takeaway or click and collect 'non essentials' from a shop.....or y'know they might just stay high because banning these won't make the smallest bit of fucking difference.

Gingerkittykat · 13/01/2021 13:43

That's a ridiculous idea, it's not up to NS to decide which food is essential.

I've had a few take aways, one from a lovely Japanese restaurant. It has all been well managed with a collection time and minimal human contact with masks and sanitising.

Even the Mcdonald drive through is almost zero risk since staff wear gloves and masks.

What are the people doing essential work meant to do when they are hungry? Just let them go and get a sandwich and drink.

It will just drive more people into supermarkets to buy takeaway food. If they ban take aways they need to close the sandwich aisle in Tesco since buying something from there will be higher risk.

Jodri · 13/01/2021 13:55

A lot of people who live rurally do not have ‘big outdoor areas’ though do they. Houses are often tagged on to a corner of a field with a tiny outdoor space.
Rural poverty is a big problem in Scotland. Throw into that mix a lack of facilities and access to them and it can be quite isolating and grim. Often you have to drive everywhere or take your life into your own hands walking busy rural roads often with a 60mph speed limit. These roads are often the last to be gritted or maintained.

Jodri · 13/01/2021 14:03

Deliveries and sat Nav are horrendously unreliable in the countryside too. We often don’t get Mail delivery for days, always try and give companies my mobile as they always need directions even though we always try and be clear. our friends in the next village complain takeaway food deliveries are always cold. I don’t know why they bother! On the rare occasion we get a takeaway we always collect.

Redtartanshoes · 13/01/2021 21:57

Although I dislike NS and the way she’s handled this I can actually see her point re takeaways and click and collect. In the past few weeks there has been 8+ people in local Chinese takeaway, none of staff wearing masks, similar number in Costa Cole ting coffees (((bins over flowing outside but that’s another story)))) and a huge queue of people outside Next collecting stuff. It’s not whether this is essential or not, it’s just not being handled properly by the businesses and people now think that wearing a mask makes them invincible. It’s shit but if it helps then it has my backing.
