Edinburgh uni

My dd is in first year at Edinburgh uni in student accommodation studying English lit. 1st semester was all prerecorded lectures with no F2F at all. I am trying to convince her to come home as she has made no friends, (has never been out) and i fear for her MH. She’s hoping next semester will be better with promised blended learning and a chance to interact and meet like minded people. Any one in the know think they’ll actually have blended learning or will it be a repeat of the 1st semester?

She definitely won’t be getting any F2F sessions until at least the week beginning 8th Feb This is under the current guidelines the University is working to. So that’s at least the first 4 weeks of L&T which will be fully online. Depending on Scot Gov restrictions etc., online only could go on longer. But, as it stands at the moment, she should expect some F2F in Feb onwards (although it’s likely to be minimal as Eng Lit has a massive first year cohort and so it’s extremely challenging finding physical and timetabled space for F2F activity.

Thanks “shorternights” i suppose its to be expected.

My Dd is a 4th year student and has also been told that it will be mid-Feb at the earliest before they're back in the buildings. I don't think she'll be attending many lectures before she's finished.

Dd is not anticipating f2f classes until February earliest although this varies by subject. Nonetheless she is itching to return and has found some friends in the accommodation. She has also joined some societies online and goes to the gym.

There is a phased return for UG students, so depending on programme and year of study, dates for the resumption of on-campus activity will vary. However, with the way things are progressing at the moment, and the narrative coming from the Scot Gov, I think it likely that online-only provision could continue for some time. The semester also ends on 2nd April, so I wouldn’t expect much on-campus.

My daughter is much the same OP but at Napier. Her flat has 3 girls in it, but they are all on different courses. DD was home for Christmas (we're in Fife) but went back over yesterday as she's desperate to see her boyfriend who is also at Uni in Edinburgh. My DD has had a lot of MH issues over the past few years (part of the reason she's over in Edinburgh and not any further away) but with no F2F lectures she's lonely and hasn't had the opportunities to make pals they way we all did as students. She's resigned herself to this whole year being like this...I'm still raging the Uni got them all signed up to paying for bloody halls when they could have all sat in their bedrooms at home and kept their (our) money for next year.

DD also in first year at Edinburgh. She was told at the beginning of December there would be no F2F next term until mid-February for her subjects but things could move out further with the new strain (last term she had 8 hours in total F2F - tutorial with a PhD student) She is back in Edinburgh as she has a part-time job but her halls are deserted. Many gave notice when teaching ended at the beginning of December and the rest are only coming back when F2F starts again as Edinburgh is refunding rent until then. DD has been lucky with her flatmates plus she has made new friends thru sport and work (and loves the city). It must be awful if you are stuck on your own. I saw that Edinburgh staff had offered time to students over the holidays - walks, cycling, fitness, quizzes etc. DD didn't sign up as she has the fear that she be assigned the sociology lecturer who had a big rant about DDs main subject (economics) and she'd be stuck with her in the Pentlands for hours.

My dd is in third year at Edinburgh and down at kings buildings. I think every subject is different. She had blended learning last semester with online and f2f practicals and tutorials I would need to ask her in what quantities though. I think more of the same is planned for next semester unless things change from Scot.gov.
Your dd English literature department will have an elected student school rep who should have a rough idea what is in place for her department next semester and will have been included in some departmental meetings. Their contact details should be easily available. Also, perhaps her director of studies (personal tutor) would perhaps have a rough idea too.
I’m sorry to hear your daughter has not made any friends. My other dd in 1st year at a different uni found joining societies really beneficial; Zoom calls of just having a cup or tea every Tuesday at 3pm with was a good contact for her. Other first years joined in with a lot not switching on their camera, so I imagine anything level of participation is cool. I hope she feels confident enough to reach out to some societies that interest her. Often the first step is the hardest.

Can she make any friends in halls?
