Map showing 5 miles outside council boundary

If you're interested in the rule that allows travel 5 miles outside your council boundary for exercise, these maps may be useful. They show each council boundary plus 5 miles as the crow flies , so you can check if parks etc are included in the buffer area.

The link above is for Glasgow, here's a list of the maps for all council areas

That's interesting. Thanks 👍🏻

Santaisreel · 27/12/2020 23:05

Can you link to the 5 mile rule?

Santaisreel · 27/12/2020 23:14

Sorry ignore me I have just found it. I had no idea this existed. So anyone in Angus can travel to Dundee for a walk but not to do their shopping?

Bytheloch · 27/12/2020 23:14

Thanks for posting but I won’t be using this as a guide. If we are all in level 4, regardless of any local efforts to stay at home, but particularly for those further north who’ve also had little to no cases, why are we being told we’re allowed ‘5 miles outside our council area’ just so arbitrary. If you go 6 miles outside, what happens? When you wake up with Covid is it because you went 7 miles out of your council area, Ffs?
It’s this level of Truman show nonsense I’m done with now.

Thanks anyway OP, I think it will be helpful to others.

What a crock of shit this is

Thank you for sharing this OP.

Exceptions: "local outdoor informal exercise such as walking, cycling, golf, or running (in groups of up to 6 people, plus any children under 12, from no more than 2 households) that starts and finishes at the same place (which can be up to 5 miles from the boundary of your local authority area)"

Don't know if it's still current. I have given up any hope of doing anything nice, I'm sure even the chance to exercise outside my town will be removed soon Sad

couldn't agree more
TheQueenOfTheNight · 27/12/2020 23:31

I don't agree with the rules about staying within council areas, I think it'd be more sensible to have stuck with the health board areas or a recommended distance. Like many people I live at the edge of a few council areas. A friend usually walks to her nearest supermarket but it's "across the border" now so she's supposed to drive to one that's further away 🤦‍♀️
Anyway I thought the maps might be useful, it's a pity the scotgov website didn't have this sort of thing.

Spot the connection Grin

Is it just me playing at working out where all the areas overlap? No-man’s land/DMZ?! Xmas Grin

rookiemere · 28/12/2020 08:30

Thanks OP.
I get really confused about this though as allegedly people were getting fined by the police for driving to Straiton shopping centre, even though if you live nearby - as we do- it appears to be permitted. So I'd worry that even if you are technically allowed, you may end up with a fine. Plus living in Edinburgh the 5 mile boundary doesn't give much more in the way of country walks.

I partly agree. I am not sticking within my Council area which is very small and which is basically just a Glasgow suburb (East Dunbartonshire). In less than 5 miles from my house I could be in Glasgow, Stirlingshire or West Dunbartonshire.

This is the problem with a government which talks about "having an adult conversation" yet simultaneously treats us like children by imposing ridiculous rules. What would have been more helpful is them saying "use your common sense" or "avoid crowded tourist spots" (not an issue in winter) or "stay local where possible". But no. Let's come up with some arbitrary 5 mile rule instead.

Total crock of shit.

Couldn't give a monkey's arse about the 5 mile rule. I wasn't even aware that was in place but even if it is will be ignoring it completely

Bytheloch · 28/12/2020 16:43

Went for a walk today, couldn’t even tell you if I was in my own council area, let alone 5 miles outside it. Drove from my house, parked up in the middle of knowhere and spotted maybe one or two other people along the way, with my not a super spreader DS able to enjoy our morning too. Bliss. Freedom to roam.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 28/12/2020 22:13

Thank you, OP.

Bikingbear · 31/12/2020 12:45

Thanks!
That looks like Glasgow is within 5 miles of South Lanarkshire!

randomsabreuse · 02/01/2021 12:58

Glasgow is within 5 miles of the easy access to sledging in the Campsies (funny sticky up bit at Balmore/Bardowie).

Could stay within East Dunbartonshire for walks (but tending to go just over the borders to get more than 5 miles from Glasgow border and to avoid obvious honeypots). Bit more difficult for shopping though, most of the local supermarkets are quite small which is annoying!
