Anyone been Christmas shopping in Glasgow?

I am debating whether to go or not this weekend.

I need to go to a couple of shops tops but will also need to get the train there. I realised yesterday I actually feel scared of going shopping! If it is fairly empty that wouldnt be so bad.

Keen to see what others have done

Haven't been to Glasgow cos it's not allowed but I was on Princes Street in Edinburgh last Saturday and i would say it was about on a par with a regular Saturday. It probably helped that the weather had been awful earlier in the day. I only went to pick up a couple of orders, I didn't fancy browsing and was horrified by the number of people who walked right past the hand gel at the entrance to shops.

I would go on a weekday rather than a weekend. It's been pretty reasonable but I'd expect that to go out of the window at the weekend.

dementedpixie · 17/12/2020 13:17

Haven't been because you're not supposed to go out of your local authority area for shopping. Cant say I want to go anyway as I hate when it's busy

Hello, I popped in last night around 5pm and it was very quiet. it made me feel a bit dispirited to be honest and not at all festive. There is free parking in the Galleries on weekdays after 4 so that's what i did. I am a Glasgow City Council resident so i wasn't out of my council area.

Lizzie523 · 17/12/2020 13:21

Hmm. I cant go on a weekday, am working full time and late nights at the moment.

Do you think it would be ok if I go for no more than an hour, for example? I am a 15 min train journey from Central. I want to get a click and collect and one other item.

I don't think the time you spend makes the difference to be honest.

kikidee · 17/12/2020 13:27

Lizzie523, I personally think it would be fine if you go as early as you can. It's definitely not as busy as usual for Christmas shopping. Could you walk into town? i live about 15-20 mins away on the train and can walk in around an hour.

OK in what sense? Safe? Within guidelines?

What are you asking?

Are you allowed to travel

Crappyfridays7 · 17/12/2020 18:14

If you’re in Glasgow area then yes if not well no...

I walk past the sanitising stations too, doesn’t mean I don’t sanitise my hands. I just use my own due to having very sensitive hands some brands cause a horrible reaction or smell absolutely putrid. I’m north of Glasgow and as much as I’d love a wee christmas shopping day it’s out of area, can’t really have lunch/drinks and don’t want to go on public transport. It’s all quite rubbish this year isn’t It I get why though

Lizzie523 · 17/12/2020 18:43

Yes I live in the area. I already know 2 people that have been in shopping who live outside the area however. Sure town is full of them.

I'm leaning towards going in the morning.

I went in last Sunday. Parked in Buchanan galleries, went to John Lewis, Hotel Chocolat and M&S. I thought it was pretty quiet and didn’t have to queue in any of those 3 stores. I would do it but go early.

Grumpycatsmum · 17/12/2020 22:38

Went last Saturday morning. Not busy but not deserted either. Starting to fill up when we left about lunchtime. Almost no queues.

Lizzie523 · 20/12/2020 01:56

Decided not to go. I went out in my immediate area to a couple of shops today and that was bad enough. Guy coughing and choking next to me while waiting.

Tempted to go for a long walk tomorrow and end up in Glasgow...(I live not far outside but not in Glasgow City Council Confused) I've heard of people being questioned at Central station, is this true? We're not in lockdown yet?!
Just because it will be the last chance for a good while even if that sounds shallow...
