Scotland's Lady: the Maid of Norway

Scotland's first queen regnant, who died on the way to her new kingdom.
I'm writing a time travel novella where Margaret's ship is brought to the waters off modern-day Scotland and quite interesting things happen when she meets modern political and cultural leaders. There was a Bishop travelling with her, which should make things awkward for the modern Church of Rome.

Well that seems a bit harsh, Troll.
I had never heard of her OP , but then history at school tended to focus on more recent events.
Good luck with the novella, seems like you have a wide range of material to highlight the huge changes between 13th & 21st century.

OOAOML · 30/11/2020 19:38

Wow you got a harsh response there! I'd heard of her. Sounds like an interesting idea, good luck with it!

HijabiVenus · 02/12/2020 14:33

We don't make enough of our female characters. Maid of Norway, Queen Margaret. Strange really, given SG claiming to be pro feminist then again, monarchs- embarrassing.

Torvean32 · 04/12/2020 18:37

I remember learning about her in history class.
I always remember this bit of history to.

In 1230 Alexander II of Scotland had the baby daughter of a rival killed by dashing her head against the Market Cross in Forfar.

cdtaylornats · 05/12/2020 08:42

She wasn't a Queen Regnant but a Queen Consort.

Bloodypunkrockers · 06/12/2020 00:12

No, she wast queen regnant

It was her throne

Jodri · 06/12/2020 09:07

I don’t really know much about monarch apart from the heavily publicised and romanticised bonnie Prince Charlie and Mary queen of Scots. Its very interesting to learn about others.

@Torvean32 Alexander II sounds horrendous! That’s awful!
Scottish monarchs could be just as evil as the rest of them lords.

Am I right in thinking that James VI of Scotland (James I of England) was the son of Mary Queen of Scots and was instrumental in bringing the mass persecution of women through the era of witch trials? Anyone recommend an easily digested history books?

Something to warm the cockles, so to speak...

Jodri · 06/12/2020 10:56

@MarchingFrogs thanks.
I did read he was compelled to write a book on the subject of witches and he sponsored Shakespeare to write the play Macbeth. Macbeth apparently in reality was a very good leader.

PocahontasMcGinty · 06/12/2020 11:02

She wasn't a queen consort, she wasn't married to the King of Scotland! She was to be queen in her own right!

She was on her way to her coronation. A more well known similar story would be Lady Jane Grey, to be queen but not yet crowned.

But yes Scottish history is woefully taught in school. I'd love a full series like David Starkey's monarchy for the Scottish royalty.

annabelindajane · 06/12/2020 11:12

Yes James was a burner of witches 🧙‍♀️

WeetabixComesAtAPrice · 06/12/2020 11:20

That sounds really interesting! I am guessing the tone will be quite satirical.

The creative writing board is great if you want constructive comments (unlike the first comment on this thread)

There were roughly only 500,000 - 800,000 people living in Scotland at this time - good luck with your novella

Gingerkittykat · 06/12/2020 23:07

It sounds interesting, I know so little about Scottish history that it is embarrassing so would be interested in learning about the lady maid of Norway.

nsalat · 08/12/2020 19:33

Thank you. I will imagine that being interviewed on modern day television or radio will be an experience for both the Maid of Norway and her Bishop. How will the people of 2020 Scotland react to Margaret? How will the people of Norway?

I’d look at the response to the Royal Train of thanks to get your answer for that OP.

I enjoy teleporting people or places from one time to another.

Teleporting Love Field just as JFK. LBJ and their wives et al arrive on 22/11/63 to 22/11/20 is one I'm also writing, because the world getting JFK and LBJ back just as Trump and Biden are tussling post-election is an interesting scenario.
