Travel ban

Ok, so NS has banned non essential travel out of Scotland for the next three weeks. What about the students getting home? This three week ban coincides with the UK "window" doesn't it?

Any students still planning on travelling during this time?

Wouldn't you call travelling home 'essential' then?

Redglitter · 18/11/2020 08:20

Travelling home will come under essential travel

DumplingsAndStew · 18/11/2020 08:26

Another who assumes this will be covered by essential travel. I imagine that'll be clarified at a briefing.

My son at uni has been told he can travel home on the 18th which is pretty much when he intended. Otherwise it makes no odds as he is coming home regardless and what difference does it really make what particular day? He has been living with his girlfriend, they will be travelling together and when home will be mainly staying at home or seeing each other, not rampaging around spreading covid.

The new rules are in place until December 11th-which is around the time most students would start to head back.

My Dd is at Uni in Dundee and needs to have 2 negative Covid tests before she comes home. The uni are setting up a testing centre.

She then needs to go to her work here and have 2 more tests before she can return to work.

Mu DC will both be coming back for Christmas End of 🎄

TBF I take great exception to the government criminalising travel

They can't force them to have tests and can't force them not to come home.

I've left it up to DS but informed him of his rights. He's not going out anyway and wont be going out when he is home other than to see his girlfriend who he lives with term time. Obviously up to others what they choose to do.

Due to the fact her job at home is a care home where she gets tested weekly when there, it cuts down how long she needs to be home to get tested before returning.
WaxOnFeckOff · 21/11/2020 19:07

yes groovee that fits with your daughters circumstances, I was saying in general that they can't force students and therefore they don't "need" a test, though they may want one or their circumstances might dictate that it's necessary. Smile

I await the SNP regime being dragged into court on this one. After months of screaming "the Tories will break international law" here the SNP did it first by interfering with the free travel area with Ireland. The Scottish Tories say it isn't within Holyrood's powers.

Scotslassie1 · 22/11/2020 09:58

I think you're a little confused. Nearly every country in Europe and beyond has curbed non essential travel at some point during the pandemic.
Closer to home, Labour did it in Wales and The Tories did it in England. Remember the Tories said that other parents would have their travel fines refunded due to Cummings not being fined?, but then they backtracked and said the fines would stand. Also Ireland 's had rules re non essential travel into the country for months. Restricting non essential travel definitely does not break international law. Oh and it does need to get passed by Parliament, as it did on Thursday.
