Anyone going near Liberton War Memorial before Remembrance Sunday?

Over the last few years, I've been trying to get a poppy cross onto each war memorial where family members are commemorated.

This year I'm doing someone from Liberton.

Would any one be willing to place a cross on the War Memorial in the Cemetery if I posted it to you?

Last year I resorted to sending one to a shop opposite a war memorial. I phoned first, but I've no idea whether they actually placed the cross.

I write on a short biography and add a picture if I have one.

It's a lovely idea @TressiliansStone

Why not contact the local school and see whether they can suggest something though they maybe reluctant to handle items from strangers.

TressiliansStone · 03/11/2020 20:11

If I can't find a named person to do it, I might try Liberton Post Office.

It seems to be very near the Cemetery, and I think my lad was a son of the Post Office – his father was a telegraphist.

I'm quite close by but in Midlothian so not technically allowed. I don't know if you're Edinburgh based but have you tried the EGG Facebook group?

Lidlfix · 03/11/2020 20:22

There is a Facebook group Cemeteries and Memorials of the Great War - they might help. High school is a good shout too as they will probably be placing their own wreath.

weebarra · 03/11/2020 20:24

libertonhighschool.org
Head teacher is Steven Kelly, school is very close to the cemetery.

TressiliansStone · 03/11/2020 20:27

Aha, Liberton High School looks like a good shout!

I didn't know about schools placing wreaths. Is that quite common, then?

(The groups would be good, but I'm not on Facebook.)

Try putting your request on the British Legion Scotland page. www.facebook.com/LegionScotland/

Oops cross post.

Namechangeforthis88 · 03/11/2020 20:35

Message me if you draw a blank. I could have a bike ride over there.

TressiliansStone · 03/11/2020 20:48

Ooh, thanks, Namechange.

I'll email the school tomorrow if I've had no closer offers, and if they don't get back to me I'll drop you a PM...

BTW, for anyone who's interested, my lad is Luca W.S. W/Optr.: www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/251523/

Seaton, as he was known, and his two sisters followed their dad into telecoms. The girls became telephone operators; young Seaton took a job with Marconi and was posted as junior wireless operator board the SS "Floridian," a cargo ship sailing the Canada route.

And this photo is what happened next. Incredibly, it was taken by a member of the U-Boat crew at the moment they sank the "Floridian" on 2 Apr 1917: you can see the torpedo track.

The U-boat had disabled the "Floridian" with artillery fire, killing five members of the crew including Seaton. Once the survivors were off, it sank her by torpedo.

There are more photos at this website:
www.fotos.ouddorp.de/html/floridian.html

And this is the account in the U-Boat's log (English translation): www.fotos.ouddorp.de/html/_2__fahrt.html

The U-Boat took the "Floridian"'s captain, her engineer and her senior wireless operator, Reggie Beynon, as POW. After the war, Reggie came to Liberton and married one of Seaton's sisters. Their son Seaton was born in the same house on Kirkgate, opposite Liberton Kirk, where Junior Wireless Operator Seaton had been born some 21 years earlier.

In normal times I'm up at Liberton Kirk every Saturday morning taking DS to his drama group in the hall. Lovely wee church. Amazing views over Edinburgh from up there. Sounds like you have it covered now.

So many lovely people! Thank you! Star

Right, that's in the post now, ApplePen.

Got a bit caught out because it turns out Remembrance Sunday is 8 Nov this year. But cross should arrive Friday, and anyway I daresay this year there won't be anything formal going on at the church/cemetery.

But it'll be there for anyone passing or making their own personal visit.

What a sad but lovely story about your relative @TressiliansStone and what a lovely thing you are doing.

ApplePenPineapplePen · 04/11/2020 20:41

Lovely story thanks for sharing x

ApplePenPineapplePen · 07/11/2020 10:06

Placed just now. The first photo shows cross against his name and second is where I placed it to avoid it being blown off. Third picture is the house of William and Margaret Luca on Kirkgate.
