Move Back Home to Glasgow?

Somefantasticplace · 21/10/2020 16:24

I was born and raised in Glasgow but have lived in the south of England for many years (husband's job, kids in school). I have close family on the southside and a large extended family all over the city.

My marriage has broken down and my kids are away at university, I'm in my fifties and I suppose I'm free to live and work where I like for the first time in decades.

During this time of being forcibly separated from my family in Scotland I've been thinking more and more about moving back home but I haven't lived in Glasgow for such a long time that I wouldn't know where to start.

If you could choose somewhere to live in Glasgow as a single, mature woman where would you go? I should make some money from the sale of my house here and be able to buy something almost anywhere in the city.

I'd like to be nearish to shops, restaurants etc. and decent public transport (train, underground, bus) would be a bonus.

I have to admit that the weather puts me off a bit but the thought of being able to spend time with family would make up for it.

Any thoughts/ideas would be really welcome.

@Sakesman

“ serialreturner” one of my happy wee dreams is to be a retired pollokshields lady in one of those flats teetering over to moyra jaynes with my friends.
I'll see you there!
heathergem · 23/10/2020 08:46

How many bedrooms would you need ? Would you like a garden? Quick access to the countryside?

I'ld be answering these qs and weighing up locations. I'ld love a flat in the west end but would still like a bit of green space to myself.

Good luck in your decision making, sounds like a really exciting relocation and lifestyle change.

@LargeProsecco I think that renting for a few months would be a great idea and the examples from Pollokshields and nearby have got me interested in finding out more. I'll need to read more about how the private rented sector works there, I am completely out of touch with it.

Ideally I'd be looking for 3 bedrooms as the two kids would hopefully spend some time staying with me in the university holidays and I'd like them to have a room each.

@Sakesman I know Queens Park and that whole area well, grew up nearby and spent lots of my childhood running around in Pollok Park Grin

@readsalotgirl63 Crossmyloof Ice Rink was a hangout for me and my friends on a Saturday, happy memories

I'm loving the usernames too and just talking to you all is making me feel so much happier. The last couple of years have been very hard and I'm not out of the woods yet separation wise but this is helping me look forward instead of just feeling stuck.

@Somefantasticplace get yourself to Glasgow hen, the weather is shite, we've aw got the plague and everything is closed down but it will be the best place to live again

Sometimes when you're in a lousy situation, the idea of something better or even change at the end of it makes it bearable, as we all know at the moment. Get onto the rental websites, scour the Southside for locations, and find yourself some light at the end of the tunnel!

GallusAlice79 · 23/10/2020 10:04

Couldn't agree more @IwishIwasonabeachnow

I love the southside, it's the most gallus place indeed. The sense of community is outstanding, and even when its pure shite, I'd still rather be here where folk have a laugh no matter what!

LargeProsecco · 23/10/2020 10:18

The private rented sector here is fine; might tighter regulation than in England & more tenants rights - plus no minimum term. So you could move in & if you found somewhere to buy in 2 weeks, you just give 1 months notice.

All tenants are on a standard PRT.

Check out Rightmove & Citylets

I would go through an agency not a private LL.

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/10/2020 18:06

I want to move into Glasgow from a small town down the Clyde, and I'm really interested in Govan.
The huge difference is that I need to be near QEUH, and also that I'll be living in an HA home.

GallusAlice79 · 23/10/2020 18:32

@IHaveBrilloHair

Govan has a housing association

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/10/2020 18:43

Oh yes I know, I just meant that I'm in a very different position to the OP!
I vaguely considered Sighthill as there's a regeneration project, but wrong hospital.
Dd has recently moved to Springburn, but no for me, her and her boyfriend are on a v limited budget though and so far are happy there, they moved from Shields Road.
Dd is at Kelvin college and her bf is at Glasgow Uni, of course mainly online though.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 24/10/2020 19:37

Look at the houses in Festival Park, one of them might work.

Californiabakes · 28/10/2020 20:06

I live in the Southside and would recommend strathbungo or Pollokshields, you’d get a lovely flat or conversion on your budget. However as a newly single person moving back home you might well be better off in the west end, maybe the park district if hyndland.

I lived in London for many years and I still miss the weather! Lovely warm summer evenings, never needing a jacket etc. It is much colder up here but the quality of life is fantastic. For what it’s worth I’ve never felt unsafe up here and Glasgow is a fantastic vibrant city.

Somefantasticplace · 28/10/2020 21:32

So many helpful replies, thanks all.

Looks like it's either Pollokshields or Hyndland/ West End. I agree @Californiabakes, Glasgow is a fantastic city and that's one of the reasons I'm thinking about coming back, so much life about it.

Just the small matter of a job to sort out now, I'm actively looking so hopefully something will come up soon.

I know everyone has already said this but definitely either west end (downhill, hyndland) or Southside (strathbungo, pollokshields side of queens park).

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/10/2020 22:27

Hyndland is amazing, I'd kill to live there.
Dd went to school there and loves it too but too expensive for them.

In your situation I’d go for Pollokshields ( not Pollokshaws) or Langside.

I’d avoid the area around cross hill / Queen’s Park - it’s Changed a lot since you lived there.

Hyndland / Dowanhill is lovely but noisy and expensive.

I also agree you should rent first to get to know the area better.

Lidlfix · 01/11/2020 16:45

Well seniors in face coverings and us teaching in them for us level 3'ers tomorrow. Relieved as our seniors have been the most complacent group and now they have some consistency.

Hope you all had a nice weekend.

Lidlfix · 01/11/2020 16:46

Sorry wrong thread Blush

ClassyRodent · 01/11/2020 18:43

I would suggest Cathcart, Fenwick Road area, Muirend or Netherlee? Plenty of people about, cafes, shops, close to Shawlands, straight bus route to town and the west end.

Like Shawlands and the West End but without the noisier pubs etc and more likely to have established neighbours and a sense of community rather than the more transient communities of students, first time renters, young familes etc who are more likely to move on just as you get to know them.

S00LA · 02/11/2020 01:39

Too many cocktails @Lidlfix? 😬

SentientAndCognisant · 02/11/2020 15:13

Yes to the weeg and no to any wee towns or suburbs
Towns and burbs are cliquey and full of Nebbie folk and you’ll never be “one of them”

G12, hyndland, dowanhill, kelvinhall, Finneston all good

The weather is shite, no getting away from it..
