Scotland’s Baby Box

Just wondering everyone’s opinion on the baby box? Is it worthwhile to order one? Are there useful products to use?

I had it with my last baby and really liked the clothes, nice gender-neutral designs etc and a decent quality. I think we used everything in it, to be honest.

I never put my baby down to sleep in it because we've got cats and they love climbing in and out of cardboard boxes, but my friends used the box in place of a Moses basket and liked it.

I wouldn't have missed it if we hadn't got it (I didn't get it with my two older children) but I did like it and think it's great for families on a tight budget

TheDaydreamBelievers · 10/10/2020 20:26

People I know who got them have liked them. I'll opt in for mine I think!

Scotslassie1 · 10/10/2020 20:27

Loved ours. We had a crib but baby preferred sleeping in it. Ear and bath thermometer probably most useful but lots of nice things in it.

icedaisy · 10/10/2020 20:30

Yeah it's lovely. Like pp said thermometers are great.

Only thing I didn't use was sling. I passed that to sling library.

Box is our toy box. Not yet been coloured in!

Mattress fit into old swinging crib from niece.

Play mat lovely, used daily.

Loved ours and used everything in it. DS slept in it rather than moses basket and when he outgrew it it became a toybox. It was definitely worth it for us.

Callisto1 · 10/10/2020 21:02

We've saved most of our baby gear so the items weren't really necessary. I think it did help our older child to get ready for the baby and it meant that the baby had things which weren't hand me downs!

Also colouring the box is a nice thing to do with older siblings. So I would definitely get it.

It's absolutely lovely and we really appreciated ours - I still use the box for storage in the kids' room. Congrats!

HirplesWithHaggis · 10/10/2020 23:15

They burn if you take a blowtorch to them. Shock

Ds1 and his.lovely DP recently received theirs for upcoming dgd, very happy with it.

Scotslassie1 · 11/10/2020 06:34

Nats couldn't you leave it just for one thread..
Yes, you'll need to look into the box to check on your baby. Fairly obvious!

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/10/2020 09:37

Couldn't leave what? As far as I can see it was links to safety concerns? Highly relevant to the topic discussed.

🤣🤣🤣 Jesus wept 🙈

Thank you all for your feedback.

Is there anything that’s not in the box which would be a good idea to purchase?

Maybe more muslins. I went through about a million of these. That aside it's pretty comprehensive! Enjoy! The sling is brilliant 😍

We got it with our second because it was free and we figured ‘why not?’. Some of the things were useful, including the bath thermometer (which we still use and is great actually) and the muslins/clothes, but others were quite low quality (the maternity pads were awful) and we found the ear thermometer to be very inaccurate (others in my local parent group said the same). We didn’t use it as a cot as we already had a bedside one we could see into and were worried about the flammability issue. My biggest gripe was the box itself actually, which was huge and we struggled to find somewhere to put it, and then struggled to dispose of it.

Coastercat · 11/10/2020 13:59

Coloring ours in was a week of lockdown entertainment for older Siblings. That alone made it worthwhile.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 11/10/2020 19:07

We liked most of ours. Our house is on 3 floors so the box helped ensure dc2 had somewhere to nap on each floor. I used it in the playroom and dc1 and I coloured bits whilst she slept.

I liked the clothes and dc2 adored the giraffe/cow comforter (it's a giraffe in our house).

Blondiecub0109 · 11/10/2020 19:13

The bath thermometer is something ridiculous like £25 in boots! As per the article posted above, the ear thermometer was crap - I even asked the HV to have a go. Bought a non contact one when it was half price but to be honest when my son was seriously ill I didn’t need a thermometer to tell me something was not right (adenovirus).

Clothes were good, good range of sizes, I liked the wrap and it got me into babyveearing baby was a limpet). Even tho my baby was 4kg born, I didn’t feel confident with it until he was a bit bigger.

The maternity pads were horrible, really plasticky. Bath sponge, towel etc good to have.

Plenty of Muslins for my needs, never really needed them, DS was not sucky. I use them to dry my hair doing curly method.

waitforitwaitforit · 11/10/2020 20:28

I liked it, but there are some things that you don't have to buy twice. DD slept in it sometimes, when the Moses basket wasn't handy but didn't really take to it. It's now a toy box though.
Only had it for my second child so passed some things I never used to a refugee charity.
