Desperate to move -Where to buy a property for £150,000 max in Scotland?

I would really appreciate some advice. I am looking to move to Scotland on a small budget to try to save my health and sanity!

I need a quiet, safe place where I can buy a 2 bed property with some outdoor space and I would love something near the sea.

The main requirement, beyond peace and quiet and access to nature, is that it is needs to have a train station as I don't drive and to be close-ish to a hospital. I would like to be no further than an hour from either Glasgow or Edinburgh if possible.

I have had the bad news that my London flat is affected by the cladding scandal as my buyer could not secure a mortgage without one of these new fire safety survey so my plans to sell quickly and to comfortably buy in Scotland with a bigger budget have been turned upside-down.

I've had a lot of health issues (with one more operation coming this week) and I really need to leave the capital for a better life at this stage because it is starting to make my long term health condition worse and I just need a way out.

Can anyone recommend somewhere? I am happy with a small town or village, but not a big city. I can renovate something and I don't need a 'pretty' house at all, just a quiet location where I can try to recover for the next few years.

Really nice village, right next to the pentlands - also has a station on a line between Edinburgh and Glasgow

I like this one. It’s under budget, on west coast (quite far north) and at end of train line.

Dh has just sold his deceased mum's "garden flat" (blocks of 4, two upstairs, 2 downstairs, all with their own front door) in Cardonald for £85,000. It had a small garden, recently refurbished very small kitchen, shower room (used to have a bath), 2 bedrooms (one decent sized double, the other a small double) and a dining room/study (which most people now convert into a kitchen/knock through to the living room.

Not close to the sea Wink but close to a railway station and in a decent enough area.

Quite far north = middle of bloody nowhere.
prettybird · 12/09/2020 19:37

Should have specified that Cardonald is in Glasgow Wink

Ayrshire FO SHOOOO

Lillipops · 12/09/2020 19:44

Lochwinnoch just outside of Glasgow...20 min drive beautiful area of outstanding natural beauty. There's a 3 bed semi for offers over £135k

Giggorata · 12/09/2020 19:49

Dumfries and Galloway.

Hawkmoth · 12/09/2020 19:51

Moray coast - you could get a 4 bed for that!

GetRid · 12/09/2020 19:56

God, I feel like moving to Scotland now. You get so much for your money!

Awrite · 12/09/2020 20:01

Another vote for Ayrshire. Ayr, Prestwick, Troon - all on train line to Glasgow. Actually, there's a terrific express bus service from Ayr and Prestwick. Cheap as chips and very comfortable.

Train station in village about 4 trains a day but bus to Helensburgh every 30 minutes where a train leaves for Glasgow every 30 minutes

maggiecate · 12/09/2020 20:12

You might find some options in Midlothian on the outskirts of Edinburgh. For example this:

it’s not handy for a station but Edinburgh has a really good bus network, and this is on a night bus route. It would take you direct to the university, the city centre and the western general hospital. Going the other way takes you towards the pentland hills. There’s another service that goes into East Lothian where you can pick up connections for the beach. Have a look at the Lothian Buses map and don’t discount stuff that’s not near a station. You could also look at Musselburgh/wallyford/Tranent

Redglitter · 12/09/2020 20:16

Definitely Ayrshire. So many lovely places there and some lovely islands just a ferry trip away too.

FAQs · 12/09/2020 20:26

@Davespecifico that one is gorgeous 😍

MissPollyPops · 13/09/2020 18:30

How about Gourock or Inverkip?

BurningTheToast · 13/09/2020 18:33

Dunfermline in Fife has a station and speedy trains to Edinburgh and has plenty going on.

Goingdooolally · 13/09/2020 23:42

Musselburgh could be a good option. On the sea, 30 mins by bus to Edinburgh or 10 minutes by train.

This is a great location, decor a bit iffy but could be a good project.

Further north than you specified- but it’s a mile from the train station (45 mins to Inverness, 90 mins to Aberdeen), 5 miles from the beach. Hospital, Supermarkets etc. Quiet location, but not isolated.

Wbeezer · 14/09/2020 08:25

Ooh @trockodile I like Elgin...

SerenityNowwwww · 14/09/2020 08:27

@Wbeezer

I know two people (friends of friends) who've moved from London to Burntisland.
Yes that’s nice there. My sister used to hide when mum wild announce we were going there for picnics. She thought it was an actual burned island 🤣
SerenityNowwwww · 14/09/2020 08:30

Needs a bit of work... I love fort Augustus...

These are amazing! I'm equally bitter as an Edinburgh resident.

SlantyBaws · 14/09/2020 08:38

Christ don't move to Rothesay. Ayrshire definitely.

throwingawaymyshot · 14/09/2020 08:59

Helensburgh? Loch Lomond? (not the sea but still pretty and you can still travel to the sea which isn't far!)

Not all parts of Ayrshire are nice by the way.
