Tayside cluster - are we headed for local lockdown?

All who work at the 2 sisters plant and their entire households have to isolate. Between that and the cases tied to Kingspark school I wonder if we are heading for local lockdown.

(NCed for this as I usually keep my location vague!)

I think they have already done a local lockdown with the 2 sister factory; all employees and their households are in self isolation (or should be) and children are not allowed to go to school. I think this is better and much more targeted.
Tayside is massive with Angus, Dundee and Perth and Kinross making it up, that would be a huge undertaking. I understand because of Coupar Angus’ geographical location that folk from all three regions work there so all regions have been affected.

TwaPehs · 21/08/2020 10:21

That make sense. It is a huge region, I just hope they've isolated folk who worked there quick enough to nip it in the bud (and that everyone is ok obviously!).

I’d like to think they’d take a sensible approach. Tayside is huge and it really is just localised clusters. 2 months ago it was just tiny pockets of Dundee (eg care homes, prison, pockets of extreme social hardship).

I’m south Perthshire and we have history of voting Tory - Queen Nicola might like to give us a wee slap-down. 😉

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 21/08/2020 15:11

FWIW my mum worked at the factory 40+ years ago. From what she said it was pretty boak-worthy - you’d be made of stronger stuff than to let covid fell you.

Jodri · 21/08/2020 16:19

Does anyone know if companies who have outbreaks will have their Covid 19 safety procedures and PPE use checked by the likes of hse? And be subject to fines or compliance etc. If they weren’t up to guidelines?

I just read that 2 sisters had an outbreak of Covid 19 in their welsh meat factory In Llangefni in June.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 21/08/2020 17:15

It’s supposed to be an airborne virus. These factories have aerosolised biological components in the atmosphere. What can PPE really do? They’re factory lines...

Jodri · 21/08/2020 17:41

I don’t know, but perhaps stop or at least reduce transmission between people and from surfaces, I thought the virus could survive on many surfaces for a long time.

LizzieMacQueen · 21/08/2020 22:08

Are we going to see a shortage of chicken product do you think?

DumplingsAndStew · 22/08/2020 01:21

I wouldn't be surprised if a further local lockdown is decided.
I'm sure I read earlier that 'Dundee' itself is headed that way, do you think they meant Tayside?

😬 at your user name OP @TwaPehs

Jungle drums are saying the clusters are far bigger than we’ve been led to believe and there are rumblings of the whole of tayside being locked down. I bloody well hope not, but we’ll find out soon enough I suppose.

Varjakpaw · 24/08/2020 14:08

Though the factory cluster is a concern, not least because they will live all over, the school is really different. It is my understanding that they closed it because of the health needs of the pupils, who are in many cases very vulnerable.

MIL will lose the plot if Tayside goes in to lock down. It is a daily job just to persuade her not to 'get the bus in to town for a change of scene'. At least at the moment she can meet friends and family in a low key safe way.

DumplingsAndStew · 24/08/2020 14:09

That would not surprise me. What jungle drums are you hearing?
Where can we see the number of infections per 100,000? Is it 20 in England when they start considering local lockdown? I'm sure the figure I saw for Tayside the other day was approaching that and I'm sure that was before the incidents at 2 Sisters and at Kingspark.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 24/08/2020 14:21

Well I’m hearing that two sisters isn’t the half of it - all the factories in the area are riddled with it.

In a way I’m “happy” about kingsbarn as a neighbour works in a SEN school and they were told NOT TO TOUCH the kids - they were expected to hover from their taxi into a row of wheelchairs at the entrance. 🙄 so in a way it’s good to hear the staff just got stuck in and helped the kids.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 24/08/2020 14:23

Thing is, tayside is bloody huge. I’m closer to Glasgow than Dundee ffs. It’s like licking down the highlands because of a cluster in Helmsdale.

DumplingsAndStew · 24/08/2020 14:25

It would certainly make more sense to separate in to separate council areas - Dundee, Angus, Perth & Kinross.

Also curious to know about the jungle drums... how can they hide the true numbers? Are people just not getting tested?

I've been wondering about that Highland Game place in Dundee, I can imagine that could be another place it'd easily spread.

Agreed. It would seem to make more sense to just lockdown Dundee and Perth, for ex, than all the rural bits too.

My DD has been excited to to start Dundee Uni since she submitted her application . Now she (and us) are worried about her getting locked down when she has only just arrived. What do you think the chances are?

I think it depends how well the 2 sisters cluster can be controlled and whether ot spreads within the community and/or other facrories have confirmed outbreaks.

Hope your DD can come, I loved my time at Dundee Uni!

Lidlfix · 24/08/2020 21:48

She's following in her big sis's footsteps. DH and I can't wait for excuses to go back. Great city and so affordable . Just hope all the great wee bars and brunch places have survived this.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 25/08/2020 08:28

Dundee is such an underrated city - she’ll have a fantastic time. I swear every time I go there the sun is out and the seals are out in the sandbanks. 😁

I want to retire to a top floor flat with a sea view.

ALLIS0N · 25/08/2020 12:42

Dundee Uni is still running some classes right now, for subjects that don’t have the long summer hols. There’s no word about any closures, everyone is expecting to start back in October, halls of residence are opening etc.

There’s no reason ATM to think this outbreak will affect any uni plans, though I know things are changing fast right now.

Some of the wee bars and cafes in Dundee are closed right now but that’s what you’ve expect in the uni hols and the fact that the weather’s not great for sitting out on the pavement drinking a latte Grin .
