St Fillans on Loch Earn

Wondering if anyone is familiar with St Fillans on Loch Earn. We love water sports and thinking of investing in a holiday home with the extended family. We also plan to rent it out for holiday lets when we can't be there. We have looked into various sites on line and really love the idea of St Fillans. It seems ideal with water sports, golf and hill walking in a beautiful setting.

Does anyone have any experience with the area? Is it quite popular among tourist? Would there be potential for holiday rental income? Is the town thriving? Are there nice restaurants and pubs?

We will visit next weekend but hoping to get some background research done. Thank you!

It used to be a village where people retired to 20-30years ago and is now a village full of 2nd homes and Holiday homes. It would be perfect for what you are looking for.

And (sorry if this sounds nasty) but it’s better that you buy there, than kill off another Perthshire/ Loch Lomond & trossachs National Park village. They are seriously dying due to holiday house ownership.

I think it’s important to say this. It’s true.

Thanks for your replies. I hadn't realised this. Will research further.

I'm glad you're visiting to get a feel.

Your comment about the "town" thriving is a bit optimistic. It's a very small village

I was up at the weekend. My youngest asked “what’s that horrible smell?”.

Well darling, that’s the smell of 5 months worth of wild campers pissing in the bushes.

But yeh, please stop buying up our villages to swan in once in a blue moon.

I live in a village that is slowly being killed by holiday home owners. They rock up for two weeks in the summer and maybe Christmas, then either the property sits empty for months or they rent it out to tourists who can't drive around small villages, put the rubbish out on the wrong day (or week) and park in other peoples spaces. Meanwhile all the young people who have grown up in the village and want to stay, have to leave and rent/buy elsewhere.

Whereas I understand the draw of a holiday home, don't be surprised if you're not particularly warmly welcomed.

We would love to buy a holiday home in Scotland. It's my husbands native land and at least one of our adult children is likely to make their permanent home there. We never will because we feel it is amoral to take housing that can be used by the local
population. I think releasing a caravan or cabin on a site that doesn't allow year round occupancy is different as long as the environmental impact of the site is considered . Sites like that bring some limited employment and business to the area and mostly don't take away housing chances.

The amount of 2nd homers is getting out of hand.
Especially ones from other countries.
Sorry, but it is.

Thanks for all your input. Have been reading up on the impact of holiday homes and must admit that I never realised what its doing.

I think we will stick to day trips to do our water sports!!!
