Edinburgh

We’re staying in Berwick on Tweed and would like to have a day out in Edinburgh. One child is a coeliac so is especially excited about sugar daddies. We’re possibly bringing our dog and two other children who are autistic. The youngest uses a wheelchair. They’re all primary aged so we’re looking for some nice country parks/walks in Edinburgh. Any recommendations would be hugely appreciated as we’ve never been to Edinburgh.

Hollywood park in Edinburgh itself.

Though I recommend st abbs (if your DC are marvel fans it's Asgard on earth 😁) coldingham bay beach.

If you like walks you could get the bus from Berwick to st abbs and walk back along the coastal path.

St abbs nature reserve is beautiful.

Dalkieth country park and Fort Douglas

The Botanic Gardens would probably be best for the chair, lots of paths and mainly flat - but I think you need to book a slot at the moment I think - check online though, don't take my word for it. It's also the right end of town for Sugar Daddies. The old town - the most atmospheric part of the city really - is all cobbles and hills so not very chair friendly unfortunately.

Sugar Daddy's is in Marchmont, right near the Meadows. This is a flat, open, parkland area so fine for walking around with a wheelchair. It has a great play area for kids too.

The Botanical Gardens is also great for walking with plenty of flat paths, as mentioned above. You need to book a ticket in advance at www.rbge.org.uk/ but it is free, they just need to regulate numbers at the moment.

Botanics definitely. Amazing views to the castle too. Although you can’t take your dog. Inverleith Park next door is dog friendly.

WaltzingBetty · 12/08/2020 09:32

Lots of great wild spaces in Edinburgh but sadly most are not chair friendly. The botanics, inverleith park and the meadows are all good options. There is a 5 km loop around Arthur's seat which is pavemented but it might be a bit of a feat of endurance with the chair as it can be fairly steep. Have a look at the bike/mixed use trails throughout Edinburgh - you can walk from the botanical/canon mills/centre right down to Leith on flat tarmac path under trees - they're the old railway lines and there are lots of them scattered around the centre.

There are two branches of sugar daddies so wherever you end up you should't be too far away

@Absofruitly have they closed the Canonmills branch?

Absofruitly · 12/08/2020 09:43

@LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett I was just going by Google, which mentions the Marchmont branch only. I just thought that was a good shout as it's near the Meadows which would be dog and chair friendly. I didn't know about the Canonmills branch.

Thanks all. Some really great suggestions.

Hi, have you heard of Euan's guide? It's a website that reviews places for accessibility, and the founder lives in Edinburgh, so quite a few places here have reviews

Sorry, just saw this was from the 11th August 🤦🏻‍♀️

@Sootikinstew

'Hollywood park in Edinburgh itself.'

Just for clarity, and as an Edinburgh person, can I just correct your little error above.

The park is called 'Holyrood Park' or 'The Queens Park'. Holyrood means holy cross in Scots. There's also the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Scottish Parliament sits next door and is also known as 'Holyrood'.

Hollywood in Edinburgh would be very exciting, but there's not quite as much drama down that way as there has been in history!

Just to say there is only one branch of Sugar Daddies now in Marchmont. The one off Dundas Street has been closed for a long while now. Matchmont is operating as take away only. The Meacows are just beside it though so good places to sit.
