City life or rural idyll?

Dh and I have had a plan to move up to Glasgow for some years now. He's from Scotland (east coast) and I'm from SE England, but we know Glasgow well and love it. We have friends up there, love spending time there, eating out, going to gigs, enjoying all that the city has to offer. So the plan was always to buy a lovely big flat - ideally in the west end - and live out our lives in the buzz of the city with all amenities on tap but still having easy access to beautiful countryside.

But...then lockdown happened. We have been spending lots of time at home, in the garden, going for country walks, using our time to grow the veg we've never been able to spend much time on before. The thought of big skies and chickens is looking increasingly attractive Grin, living a more relaxed outdoorsy life, maybe even near a beach. We've not been to a gig or a restaurant for months and we don't miss it at all. Suddenly the thought of being without my own outside space seems really depressing. But I do really love Glasgow, it feels like coming home.

So, now we're torn. Part of me hankers after the city, part of me wants the country - but it's got to be either/or - no suburbs! DH feels the same way.

The other thing is that while it would be just me and DH most of the time, I have a ds at university who would need to live with us in holidays and probably beyond.

With a budget of max £400k and no ties to schools or work (but good broadband and transport links for ds a must!) - would you do city or country? And if country, where?

Could you get a cheapish 1 bed in an ok area of Glasgow and a bigger propert out in the countryside? Then you'd have somewhere to stay in Glasgow for gigs etc and also maybe for your DS to stay in for parts of his hols etc?

Personally I'd look at it as an opportunity to divest some assets and buy flat in DSs name that you could use from time to time.

The train system into the city centre is pretty good to be honest.

Im in East Ren- my house overlooks an old farm and fields with sheep and has some nice countryside aspects but I'm 20 mins on a train into town. It's a good win/win.

If you don't have kids I'd love to live in Carmunnock. It's not quite as close to the train station- maybe a £5 taxi but has more of the rural idyll feel.

Funnily enough I was checking out those St Vincent St flats the other night! And that cottage looks lovely, maybe a bit short on bedroom space but definitely on the right lines.

Will check out Carmunnock too, thanks both of you!

Thorntonhall is also on the Trainline.

Or places like Eaglesham, Strathaven or Houston (which have one nearby)
