What time can I go to Cramond Island

fluffygreenmonsterhoody · 10/07/2020 07:55

Making the most of our newfound freedoms to take DS to Cramond today.

Last time I went (10 years ago!) we got caught out and ended up wading through the Forth (also the day the sewage plant leaked 200 million litres of raw sewage, so that made for a lovely first date).

I can’t make sense of the tide times, so can some kind soul please tell me when would be good to go? Thanks a million.

You might what to check if this has changed in the last few days, but the crossing has been blocked off by barriers during covid due to the amount of rescues from people going over.

Ecthelion · 10/07/2020 15:22

Cramond is still closed because of Covid - too many people going out and getting trapped and needing rescued.

When it does reopen the best way to find out tide times is to use the RLNI text service - just text the word CRAMOND to 81400 and they text you back the crossing times for the day. It's free.

Sorry to crash your thread - but my dad's middle name was Cramond and this is the first time I've ever seen his name anywhere else!

What/where is Cramond island?

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/07/2020 16:36

Cramond is an area of Edinburgh on the coast and to the west of the city. Old village that's been absorbed. Has a beach and there is a small island you can walk out to at low tide. Think there are some old war concrete things out there but its been years since I've been. Is there a Scottish connection with your Dad?

Spaghettio · 10/07/2020 16:54

My grandfather was Scottish, but my father was an army brat and never really lived in the UK. He emigrated to Australia when he was 18 (where he met my mum).

Both my dad (and my mum by proxy) were v proud of their Scottishness. They even did Scottish country dancing for fun!

But my dad HATED his middle name! He always said he wouldn't subject any of his kids with that name. I think it's just because it's unusual- not because it was Scottish. 😆.

I've been to Scotland a few times but have never heard any mention of Cramond. I think I'll have to visit next time I'm there!

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/07/2020 17:52

That's lovely, your grandfather must have had some connection with Cramond I think as whilst it's quite common to use Scottish surnames as first names, I've never come across Cramond used as either a surname or first name. Definitely worth a visit when next you are here. We used to go when we were children and nearly got marooned on the island a few times. I took my own DC and my DM one time when visiting, I think she enjoyed reliving the happy times she spent with her brood down there.

Spaghettio · 10/07/2020 18:18

I think my kids would love to be marooned there! I'm adding it to the list of places to visit. But I might wait until we visit in the summer - we're coming up for Xmas but I don't fancy crossing to it in winter!

I've just gone all nostalgic on my dad's behalf. 😊🥰

Spaghettio · 10/07/2020 19:32

Thank you @WaxOnFeckOff - I've emailed my aunt for any further family gossip or reasoning behind the strange naming of my father! ☺️

TakemetoGreeceplease · 10/07/2020 19:36

It's not closed. We went to the island yesterday. Safe times were 10am-2.30pm then 10. 30pm iirc. Not been since I was a teenager, the views were amazing and it's much bigger then I remember.

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/07/2020 20:20

@Spaghettio, isn't it great that you've now been inspired to find out about your dad's name? Grin

Spaghettio · 10/07/2020 20:23

@WaxOnFeckOff it really is! Thanks to everyone, especially the OP for starting this thread and inspiring me. Smile

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/07/2020 20:31

It's actually got me a bit teary but in a good way, taking my mum to Cramond was probably the last time we had a day trip with her, she didn't die until many years later but really wasn't willing or able to go anywhere non essential after that. DSs are grown up now but maybe we should take a new trip.

Spaghettio · 10/07/2020 21:10

@WaxOnFeckOff I think this warrants a family day out! (With fish and chips. Anything by the sea/water means fish and chips.) 🐠 🍟

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/07/2020 21:25

With proper edinburgh chippy sauce - not available much outside edinburgh. We still have to prebook a slot and pre order with our local chippy so not sure what the situation in Edinburgh is. We'll maybe leave it a wee while, my DMs birthday in August so sounding like it might be worth getting my brothers and sisters together then as well.

Spaghettio · 10/07/2020 21:29

That sounds like a plan to celebrate/commemorate your mums' birthday. 🍟🍟🍟🍟 #nochippysauceemoji 😂

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/07/2020 21:51

@Spaghettio, this is the thread that keeps on giving! Thanks OP Smile

GlassOfProsecco · 11/07/2020 07:51

@Spaghettio - strangely there is no chippy in Cramond - the neatest is about a mile away inDavidson's Mains.

There are cafes along the harbour, beach & River Almond Walkway. Plus a pub at either end of the walkway - Cramond Brig at A90 or the Cramond inn - the latter does not accept cash & you are not allowed to use mobile phones!

Cramond Falls Cafe is lovely x

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/07/2020 20:40

Just laughing that on the link @Groovee, it tells you distances to the nearest beaches and that Aberdour etc is 3 miles away - well maybe if you are able to zip line across the Forth :o

fluffygreenmonsterhoody · 13/07/2020 07:49

Well we had a lovely day out, walked over and explored the island, then wandered back and along the beach to the Boardwalk. Holy cow tho - £8 for two ice creams was a shock to the system!

@Spaghettio that’s fantastic that you’ve found a family connection! Cramond is a lovely part of the world.

@WaxOnFeckOff I’m glad to give you a wee walk down memory lane too Flowers

@Spaghettio attaching some Cramond pics for you.

First is looking up the river Almond (the village grew up along the Almond which is a tributary of the Forth estuary and was used to power mills - there are a whole series of them Peggy’s Mill, Caddies Mill)
Second is a view of the weir at one of the Mills.
Last is looking out from the esplanade to the Island.

(They have attached out of order bit I’m sure you can match them up with the description).
One of the recent WW2 films with Churchill planning d-day used the Island causeway as a location - can’t remember name and don’t want to loose this post when I go & google!

@opinionatedfreak thank you so much! We've just confirmed that we will be spending Xmas in Scotland (COVID dependant) so we'll try to get to Cramond then! I'm hoping it looks just as beautiful in a winter setting! 🥶😁
