1 Year uni courses similar to PGDE

DH has a degree in a science subject, graduated 5 years ago and has never used it. He's looking at retraining, but we don't really have the time/money for him to take 3/4 years out to do this. He doesn't want to be a teacher, but something similar to the PGDE course would be ideal, is there anything similar out there?

Grateful for any suggestions, thanks!

If he doesn't want to be a teacher do what I did- Masters in Education (2 years).

If he doesn’t want to teach, what would be the point?

naemates · 07/07/2020 12:28

Sorry, I haven't explained that very well!

I mean a qualification that converts your degree into a different career path, as the PGDE does for teaching, but for a different career, if you see what I mean?

All I can suggest is he carefully reads the descriptions of any post-grad courses he likes the look of on all of the Uni website prospectuses. Or try the SVQ website?

Social work.

Depending on his interests, Code Clan and FDM are potential ways into technology careers.

career guidance

you work in schools and/or with older age groups (redundancy) but its not teaching.

You do need to show a genuine interest, and experience in coaching / mentoring /advising / education can help.

Its a one year course for the postgrad diploma which is the minimum to get into the sector. 2 years if you do the masters (not necessary unless you want to move into university career guidance)

careers advisers in very very high demand right now!

I guess the first thing to decide is what he wants to do and if he needs a degree in the subject in order to do that. (And what level he is willing to start at.)

Also maybe depends on what his degree is. If he wanted to be an Actuary for example, they would (I'm told) be happy with any numbers type degree not just maths, so engineering, computer science etc.

There is regulatory type work where knowledge of the rules and the ability to interpret and make decisions is more important and having a degree less so.e.g. Financial Services, gdpr etc

Some careers require specific accreditation via the degree so I would guess that some type of conversion course may not give the appropriate accreditation depending on what degree was completed initially.

Well it would depend on what career path he wanted to go down. Any previous experience he has (workplace as well as his degree subject) will impact what training options are required.

Would he be eligible for any apprenticeship or graduate schemes? The Civil Service, for example, has it's graduate scheme open to all graduates, not just fresh-out-the-box 22 year olds.

Do you just mean a 1 year course with a route into a career? There are lots of options through 1 year Masters degrees, or Law courses, or coding courses. Is he interested in any particular field?

I don't have any suggestions, I'm just interested to see what posters recommend.
