Hi everyone,
I am planning on moving to Scotland from London in the next few months and I want to buy a small house (2 bed is all I need) somewhere near Glasgow. Could be up to 45 minute commute as I usually work part-time from home or a part of the city that I could afford. I love the sea and I am looking for lots of green space so rural or seaside would be fine. I am an arty, vegan and I although I am British I was born in an EU country. Schools are not a worry as kid has flown the nest.

The main thing is that it needs to be quiet and safe. I had some big health problems in the past few years and now I want to lead a less stressful life and this will be my 'forever home'.

My budget is £250,000 absolute maximum but ideally I would want to spend less. Any suggestions most welcome!!

Ayrshire 100%!

IHaveBrilloHair I'm there often :-) inlaws, and at the natural therapy centre down in the front, for back treatment.

Op - Helensburgh gives you rural/seaside/and the highlands on your doorstep, an artsy scene, a peace camp and the best cafe ice cream. There's even a cinema in an old converted church. Showing Andre Rieu the last time I looked . What more could anyone want?

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/07/2020 22:21

The cinema is at the end of my street, its great.

I live in Helensburgh too and love it. Walking along the seafront seeing the hills in the vs ground is special. Beach isn’t great but will improve now that it’s not being dredged for the pier. Housing stock is good and affordable. Love the shops, restaurants and cafes and it’s on a direct train route to West End, central Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Also in East Dun are Bearsden and Milngavie, very nice and quiet and only 15-20 mins to west end and 20-25 minutes to Glasgow city centre but also not far to Loch Lomond. Glasgow has loads of amazing vegan places to eat so it could be worth being closer if you like eating out. It can be expensive but you’ll get a 2 bed in that price range, maybe a 3 bed at the upper end.

Muirhead, which isn't far from Lenzie or Kirkintilloch is lovely. Village feel and your budget would get you a lovely home! Only ten minutes by express bus to city centre as its motorway plenty of beautiful country walks right on your doorstep.

@Roseburn Helensburgh sounds wonderful too! I like the sound of that cinema :)

Re pricing. DH is currently selling late MIL's house in G61. All EAs said it is worth about £325K. Home report value is £325K (fancy that!). It's advertised as O/O £295K. They told him they subtract 10% from the HR value as the asking price.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 09/07/2020 10:34

I can second Helensburgh for the ice cream! It's our guilty treat. It has much more to commend it, obviously Grin

randomsabreuse · 09/07/2020 11:08

Largs also has amazing ice cream (Nardinis on the esplanade).

kikisparks · 09/07/2020 12:10

Largs has some nice vegan options too- couldn’t get much at Nardinis but there’s vegan ice cream At Geraldos and vegan fish and chips amongst other things at Ginos.

If I were moving to the coast I'd pick Troon over Largs and Prestwick, although those places are nice too. The west coast is cheap for accommodation. 4 bed Victorian detached for £250k in the slightly rough and ready town where I live. I love it, seaside walks every day and a quick train ride to Glasgow. If money was no object though, I'd move back to the West End near Glasgow Uni.

thisyearsuckssofar · 09/07/2020 21:33

Actually Helensburgh seems nice too although I haven't spent a lot of time there. I want to visit the cinema there.

I came on to suggest Helensburgh too. I used to live in Rhu, a small village just outside Helensburgh. But also the Aysrshire coast is lovely.

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/07/2020 16:23

Rhu is lovely.
My Dds boyfriend is from Rosneath, but they live together in Glasgow now.
