Commuting to QEUH and UWS?

Hi! My husband and I are making the difficult decision of moving to Glasgow and we would like to know if there are any nice areas (with good schools and amenities like cafés and library) that would be good for us to commute to Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the University of the West of Scotland in Paisley. If possible, we would like to commute no more than 30 mins each, and to live in a 3-4 bedroom house of less than £350k. This is my first post, so many, many thanks!

You should look at areas like Houston and Bridge of Weir, they are good areas not far from Paisley and reasonably close to the hospital (although that part of the M8 can be busy at commuting time).

It would also be worth looking at places like Milngavie and Bearsden, good school and would be OK travel wise. House prices can be expesnive but you should get something within budget.

Have a look at Shawlands, Langside, Newlands and (parts of) Pollokshields. Shawlands has great cafes, good access to public transport, lots of great parks and Shawlands Academy is a great school (in spite/because of the wide demographic in its catchment).

Good access to QEUH and to Paisley.

What age are your kids?

Thanks for your answers @EmmaC78 and @prettybird!

My daughter is only one year old, so we are also interested in good nurseries. Do you know if they usually have a long waiting list in these areas?

Initially we had a look at Newton Mearns and around but then saw it can be a long commute in rush hour and that Bearsden might be a better option for us. We'll have a loot at Shawlands and Bridge of Weir! It's also a plus if it's close to the city for the weekends.

Don't know about nurseries and waiting lists - although I've seen people recommending Little Einsteins on Shields Road on the local Facebook groups that I'm a member of.

I was lucky enough to be able to use a child minder (more like a mini nursery as there were 3 running it), which was in the house next door Grin (neighbour, her mum and her MIL).

We also then used an excellent council nursery on Nithsdale Road for the year before ds started school (more like the English equivalent of pre-school). But ds has now finished his 2nd year of Uni so that's a long time ago Wink

Langside, Shawlands, Battlefield are all decent primaries. Glendale Primary is excellent but it feeds Bellahouston, not Shawlands Academy unless you succeed in getting a placing request Wink. But that's so far in the future that you'd have time to move if you wanted.

Bearsden is great.

I would say Newton mearns is too far out
Bearsden/Milngavie,I know lots of people commute to QE from there
And the schools are pretty much the best
Or Jordanhill if you can get into the school, not sure how easy that is but it is the best school

Giffnock is a pretty reasonable commute to both & the schools are pretty good. Rouken Glen park, cafes, family-friendly & good transport links. Same with Clarkston.

Agree Houston is a good choice for a more villagey feel.
