So when are we going back to school?

I was under the impression that NS had announced that all schools in Scotland would start back on August 11th. I have had surveys from my local authority asking when we would like the week's holiday in lieu and if we want 1 or 2 in-service days before we start back in August.

Last night a colleague posted a piece showing all the start dates from the different authorities - some were 10th August, !1th, 12th up to the 18th and 19th.

I am totally confused Confused

Our school in Fife has put out a letter this morning to say they are still waiting on the Government to review blended learning models and it well be sent out in due course. It's a school over capacity as it is. They've had to use staff rooms and libraries to create classrooms in the past so no idea how they magic up more space.

yogafailure · 19/06/2020 11:45

I'm also in Fife and I know what our school plan is (at the moment until it all changes AGAIN) but nothing can be said until it's agreed across the region. Doesn't help that info tends to come out about teatime on Fridays, throwing SLT and school staff into anxiety attack over the weekend. From dcs primary and secondary schools I've heard nothing so far.

Nothing from Aberdeenshire still. They only sent out a survey asking if we were planning to attend/needed transport yesterday, so not expecting anything imminently! There are two more weeks of term left here though.

MrMenGoSwimming · 19/06/2020 13:20

Our rural school confirmed today that my P1 and P4 children will be in 2 days a week in August.

jerometheturnipking · 19/06/2020 15:27

My DC's primary school (Fife) have confirmed 2 days a week in August too. First week of term will be one day so each cohort can be in that week to allow for the inservice days on the Monday-Tuesday.

Does anyone else think Alex Neill will be getting expelled from the party after that speech he gave about education proposals?

nextslideplease · 19/06/2020 17:24

what's he said?

Tomorrowisanewday · 19/06/2020 17:31

"SNP MSP Alex Neil said the current proposals – where regional differences could see some pupils returning to school for just one day a week – are “absolutely unacceptable”.

He said: “That is not good quality education, that is not blended learning, it’s bleeding learning. Surely we can do far better than that for our children?”"

To the education committee today

nextslideplease · 19/06/2020 17:32

just had a look....

hang on? Are English schools going back full time as normal in September or did Gavin whatshisface mean all year groups going back (blended learning)?

applesandpears33 · 19/06/2020 17:43

I've just heard Radio Scotland discussing this. They say he dodged the question and it wasn't clear if all pupils were going back full time or not.

Needachemistrytutor · 19/06/2020 18:00

Clear as mud then! Teachers have no idea what’s going to happen either.

RaraRachael · 19/06/2020 18:22

I was into school today and have absolutely no idea what is happening in August. Absolutely livid as stuff has been moved out of our classrooms by support staff without us knowing anything about it, to be stored goodness knows where.
We have been told to totally strip walls as "children might touch the frieze paper" even though it's all outwith their reach. If we don't do this, it has to be covered in clingfilm. Has anybody else been told this? I really fail to see why there can't be one Scotland-wide policy on stuff like this. Fair enough, each school needs to make its own plans on days in school etc depending on size, staff etc.

In the meantime, a childminder friend is allowed kids from up to 4 families at a time in her home. whilst I know her home is immaculate, I cannot believe for a minute that everything one child has touched wont be touched by another without being bleached/disinfected. The DC are outside as much as possible but will be using same play equipment. Some of the DC she has in her care are crawling. I'm not saying this is wrong btw just that it's difficult to justify keeping school kids 2m apart at school when they may have been in all sorts of care settings with all sorts of other DC.

nextslideplease · 19/06/2020 18:44

next month we might be able to go to portugal and back without quarantine, if the media are to be believed, but you can only go to school 1 day a week? FFS

I get the need to stay safe but what I don't get is what is safe and what is not. Its all a bloody mess.

Coastercat · 19/06/2020 20:38

My son is in secondary school and we haven’t heard how many days he’ll be going in, but He thinks it’s hilarious that he’ll be walking to school with all of his friends and when they get there they’ll all then have to stand 2m apart. Crazy.

We’re Edinburgh though and one of the politicians I contacted said the education department was due to release more info earlier in the week but there has been a delay. Speculation that a rethink is in progress. Let’s hope so!

Coastercat · 19/06/2020 20:40

Speculation that Edinburgh are having a rethink that is.

Iggi999 · 19/06/2020 20:41

Coaster he should be walking to school 2m apart from all his friends (current rules) it's not the schools fault if they choose not to follow them outside of school!

pinkcarpet · 19/06/2020 20:53

@WaxOnFeckOff i totally agree that if kids are at a childminder on their 'homeschool' days (because unsurprisingly their parents have to work and you cannot work from anywhere with young children around) and mixing with other households then what on earth is the point of social distancing in schools? I can vaguely see how S1 and older could manage social distancing although i think it would do.more harm than good for their mental health

Iggi999 · 19/06/2020 21:03

(I realise it is easier said than done to get teenagers to SD but there will be those who are worried and want to, and school will allow for that. Being indoors for hours is kore dangerous than walking outside for a short period)

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/06/2020 21:13

Childminder friend been asked by loads of extras to take their DC over the holidays but can't accommodate everyone. She's been open all the way through, initially just for key worker DC and not her regular customers.

She's just hoping there will be places open to take all the DC to as she usually has trips out all the time to parks and farm parks and swimming etc. and the childminders sometimes team up for big trips with all their mindees for picnics etc but that could equate to about 20 kids for 3 minders.

Coastercat · 19/06/2020 21:37

I could make sure my son socially distanced from his friends, but I see the serious harm this lockdown has done to his mental health so would far rather he didn’t.

Iggi999 · 19/06/2020 21:39

I don't mean he shouldn't meet them and talk to them, just do it with a bit of space between them!

Mascotte · 19/06/2020 21:40

I've told my boy not to lick friends or door handles
