1140 hours - only going ahead for Key Workers?

Postagequestion · 06/06/2020 21:21

Heard from our private nursery last week that the local authority has confirmed that the planned 1140 hours will be scrapped for everyone except children of key workers. 600 for everyone else.
I have asked the nursery to clarify incase I am misunderstanding, but it did seem pretty clear.
Has anyone else heard this?

I am getting up at 5 ,going to bed at midnight, working about 10 hours, home schooling for about 5 hours and cooking/cleaning/laundry/shopping the rest of the time,
Exhausting,unsustainable going forward

Postagequestion · 08/06/2020 11:11

I agree that it is unsustainable to put it mildly.
We are lucky in that we do have grandparent help available, for when the guidelines allow us to use it. They are not elderly/ vulnerable. (There seems to be a belief that most grandparents of nursery children are over 70?)
But by delaying any nursery opening, we will, with grandparents agreement, end up using their help sooner than we should.

@user1487194234 - something needs to give!! That's crazy.

For me, it's the schoolwork that has been prioritised lower; I can manage 2 x 30 min sessions a day at most. I just do literacy & numeracy, then put on BBC bite size, maths extra.

MumofHunter · 08/06/2020 16:52

TheMurk I do my work when my children sleep. I'm up till midnight then again at 5. It's saving lives though is how I'm looking at it.

I'm in Falkirk Council area too and what's crazy is that our local nursery was one of the first to implement the 1140 hours and have been doing so for about a year with all the space and staff needed for this, and has now dropped back to 600hours. So frustrating

Scotslassie1 · 10/06/2020 09:15

Does it mean they won't have children un nursery

Fundays12 · 10/06/2020 10:28

Scotslassie kids should still be going to nursery I think but much less hours than what they would have been.

Falkirk have now announced that until phase four is implemented and the 600 hrs kicks in, children will be offered a proportion of those hours when the nurseries re-open in August. So it looks like DS will be there one day a week at most until restrictions are lifted. I almost feel like it’s not worth him going as I’ll have to sort care for him and the baby for all the other days anyway.

I feel sorry for those parents who had 1140 hours paid last year for their three year olds and now will only get 600 when they’re four. That’s a lot of money to have to find when you weren’t planning for it.

Starsonamat definitely feel for parents who are now only getting half the funding. Many people will have made decisions regarding jobs/hours working based on the funding. I went back from mat leave at the start of the year and increased my hours based on DC1 getting the 1140 in August.

We are currently getting the means tested 900 from GCC, does anyone know if this will also drop back to 600? If so, that's a significant difference in nursery fees we will be paying, after already having to reduce our income by taking unpaid leave for childcare while the nurseries are closed :(

princesspeppax · 12/06/2020 21:33

@poppet31 I'm also south lanarkshire and have received a letter for my DC stating they will get 1140 hours in August, but not anymore details included in the letter

CaptainMerica · 13/06/2020 09:27

I'm in aberdeenshire, and my nursery (private) has been trialling the 1140 hours for over a year now. They are expecting to continue, last I heard, but are prone to sticking their heads in the sand.

I guess we will find out more in the next week when aberdeenshire release their guidance. There is no capacity related reason why they couldn't continue to provide the hours, as they have a lot of outdoor space and are big into the forest school fad.

It wouldn't really be fair for some people to get it and not others though. I just want to know what is happening now really.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 19/06/2020 17:52

I’ve got 1140 hours funded, at a private nursery. Which I think will realistically translate into 2 full extended hours days for 51 weeks of the year.

poppet31 · 24/06/2020 11:00

I've now had confirmation from my private nursery that we will be given the 1140 hours (south Lanarkshire) but only on 2 full days. No option for half days etc. Haven't been told the days yet we are being offered but should find out this week. I'm very relieved as I'm due to go back to work in August after adoption leave and had budgeted for this funding.

Any recommendations for nurseries in South Lanarkshire for a one year old?? New to the area so don’t know where to start looking! Thanks
