First Minister recommending face covering

Definately seeing more people wearing masks when out shopping but i think I would feel really self conscious wearing one so not looked into it.

However after the announcement today that we should consider covering our faces I'm having a rethink. Where do you even start to get masks in Scotland though and are cloth ones that you wash recommend?

Bonnieweelass, as someone with hearing loss, I get you. It's difficult. But it's also better than passing on/getting a deadly virus. It doesn't matter which government gives the advice, it's for everyone's benefit and unfortunately, it will make life a bit tougher for some of us. I can't get as angry about it as you - I also have asthma to deal with, and have been wearing a mask for weeks. This is new territory for us all and the SG is giving guidance to save lives, not piss you off.

Bonniewee it might be worth finding out what deaf people in other countries are doing. It's the law in Germany that people have to wear masks in offices, supermarkets, etc. Presumably the German deaf community will have advice and guidance.

I am not a mask fan. I think the current scientific evidence for their benefit is exceptionally weak. I also think that Sturgeon's main aim in saying they recommended was to get in ahead of the Westminster announcement the next day.

I don't want to wear a mask because I find them itchy, and uncomfortable, especially with raging hayfever. I can't bear anything on my face.

However I also understand that lots of businesses are getting to the stage of needing to reopen soon, or never reopening. So many will come up with their own rules. We were due to fly with American on an internal US flight this summer (no longer happening) but that's what they have done - as of 11th May, all passengers will be required to wear masks. So even though it may not be law, many of us will have to wear masks if we want to go into Greggs, or B&Q, or pick up something in Argos for example.

I like these visors people arE making with Perspex!

cdtaylornats · 04/05/2020 15:49

I'm all in favour of Sturgeon wearing a mash, and Freeman an old fashioned diving helmet.

I await information from the real government and not the self-aggrandising assembly.

Calyx72 · 05/05/2020 20:35

@cdtaylornats do you think the "real government" have handled things well up to now? Genuinely curious.

So, it appears that lockdown will remain in place in Scotland, while being eased in Scotland. Are you going to ignore the guidelines up here in favour of Johnson, etc down south?

Mrsjayy · 07/05/2020 06:32

"The real government" jesus wept Hmm

Frariedeamin · 07/05/2020 06:45

I am also hard of hearing and will not be able to communicate with people wearing masks as I lip read. A lot of people have felt isolated during lockdown and that’s how a lot of d/Ddeaf people feel all the time due to barriers in communication. Masks will just add to the further isolation of the up to 1/6 of the country who have hearing difficulties. I’m not saying I know what the answer is or what is best but decision makers need to take this into consideration. It’s not a small number of people and includes a great number of children and young adults, not just those with age related hearing loss.

There is a risk that if measures ease elsewhere people will come here as they perceive it to be safer. Perhaps ScotGov is thinking of trying to make Scotland generally less attractive to those fleeing big cities.

fascinated · 07/05/2020 11:47

A lot of tourism, cottages etc, were trying to attract visitors... and probably will again. There’s a risk of spread.

WaxOnFeckOff · 07/05/2020 11:57

To be honest I think there is more likely to be people heading over the border to face less restriction.

fascinated · 07/05/2020 14:15

Well, good luck to them! They can attend hospital there I suppose, if they get ill?

Mrsjayy · 07/05/2020 14:55

Apparently 4 cars were shooed back over the border from a supermarket in Cumbria they had taken a wee day oot probably to multi buy wine 😃

cdtaylornats · 07/05/2020 23:12

I fully support Sturgeon covering her face.

Scotslassie1 · 12/05/2020 22:24

My friend's an estate agent in Inverness and there's been a lot of queries from south of the border.

cdtaylornats · 12/05/2020 23:09

I suspect when the money from residual stop Sturgeon will fall in line.
