Moving to Glasgow area

We are planning to move up to Scotland as soon as we can . My daughter will be in what I believe to be S3 as she is 14. I am looking at the Bridge of Weir/Houston area as I d like to get her into Gryffe High.
Can anyone advise me about the admission process , whether it’s difficult and whether we have a chance of her getting a place ?
Also if not what other local schools are also good or recommended?

I think the best thing to do if you haven't done so yet is to contact the council
Normally in Scotland you get into the school if you are in the catchment school as long as you are in the catchment area
But for popular schools like Gryffe there might not be a place available immediately
You need to have secured a property in the catchment area to actually apply for a place
Catchment is key in Scotland so make sure the houses you are looking at are in the correct area
Houses in catchment of good schools command a premium as people move to the correct area to get into the school they want

When is your dd's birthday? Our cut-off dates are different here, but the Scottish system is more flexible/pragmatic so what year she is currently in might be more relevant.

If you're expecting to have moved by August (Lockdown permitting Wink) and that she would be going in to S3 then, is she is in Y9 at the moment and would be going in to Y10 in September?

@prettybird it’s the 13 th July and yes she would have been in year 10 in UK. What are the cut off dates ? I am looking into properties in the catchment but obviously need to secure a tenancy would it be Renfrewshire council ?

Cut off date is March but with flexibility to (genuinely) defer for those with birthdays after August (in practice, January/February, a few December and even fewer November birthdays).

So July means she'll go from being at the young end of the year to the older end of the year.

If she's currently 14 and turns 15 in July, then she will be starting s4 in August

Scotland is also in the UK. I know you don't mean anything by that, and I'm anything but a foaming nationalist, but you need to be more careful as it really winds people up. Smile
