Why are the universities stooping face to face lectures but the schools are still open?

I don't get it.

I also dont understand why they aren't doing a blanket close of the uni. Staff are still going to be in. Feels a bit like protecting the elite (academics) and letting anyone within professional services suck it up.

My department personally have been preparing to move to home working for us all and have already allowed the more at risk to wfh.

I'm glad to be at home but would like the rest of my team to follow suit.

As for the schools, I'm hoping we'll know more by Tuesday.

I thought the idea in the UK was to build herd immunity. I don't see how everyone sitting in their houses stock piling toilet roll is helping anyone.

sainsburyshopper · 15/03/2020 19:31

Oops posted too early. I meant the reason for the schools being open. Plus, initially the Unis that closed were ones with confirmed cases.

Verily1 · 15/03/2020 19:32

Uni students don’t need babysitters

Honeyroar · 15/03/2020 19:32

Probably because a lot of the foreign students have gone home - that way they can still provide them with lectures and receive their fees. If you’re doing that for the many foreign students you might as well do it for all?

Groovee · 15/03/2020 19:36

Dunblane High is closed.

nachthexe · 15/03/2020 19:38

Unis are going to have to stage any shutdown. It’s nowhere near as easy as shutting a school. They have teens from everywhere that they are housing and feeding. It isn’t something you can just stop doing. So moving to online classes reduces the risks of large Petri dish lecture halls etc, and allows profs to figure out IT support. The administration continues to work towards scenario planning.
You can’t just shut down a campus. It isn’t possible.
Shutting a school causes issues with working patents but it doesn’t make skint teenagers miles from home homeless and starving.

DPotter · 15/03/2020 19:38

Wouldn't apply to all universities but DD's has large nos of overseas students who are going home before borders closed, so closed on Friday

nachthexe · 15/03/2020 19:39

(As in, immediately- you can do it in stages)

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 15/03/2020 19:39

Students don't need child minding!

IceColdCat · 15/03/2020 19:40

Universities have thousands of students, many coming from different parts of the UK or from abroad. It's a higher risk than for schools.

FailingMeansYouArePlaying · 15/03/2020 20:12

When I talk about a blanket closure I really do mean within professional services as we can all work remotely.

I accept there will be essential roles that may need to involve on campus work but the vast majority do not need to be there.

It's a personal opinion as I personally dont agree with our governments herd immunity approach.

FailingMeansYouArePlaying · 15/03/2020 20:12

Any idea why Groovee? I assume confirmed cases?

Lidlfix · 16/03/2020 07:32

Dunblane High is closed for deep cleaning following a confirmed case (pupil) . Not sure how long for. There are others Perth High for example closed for 3 days . Stirring Council has directed all staff with underlying conditions or who are pregnant to work from home

AnneOfTeenFables · 16/03/2020 07:38

Apparently the 'herd immunity' was a miscommunication.

FailingMeansYouArePlaying · 16/03/2020 09:10

Hell of a miscommunication. Be interesting to see how that plays out, backtracking because its be deemed completely irresponsible by experts across the globe.

"Whoops, didnt mean it like that. My bad Hmm"

My sarcasm aimed at the government not yourself.

If they make the wrong choice now it can't be rectified.

Groovee · 16/03/2020 15:58

@FailingMeansYouArePlaying a confirmed case meaning the school is being deep cleaned.

letmepeeinpeace · 16/03/2020 16:04

My university is staying open

ErrolTheDragon · 16/03/2020 16:08

Universities have thousands of students, many coming from different parts of the UK or from abroad. It's a higher risk than for schools.

How so? The ones that are here already will have been here since the start of this term. If they go home they probably won't be allowed back anytime soon.

DDs uni seems at the moment to be moving towards online teaching but keeping accommodation open for those who can't go home for whatever reason. Apart from the overseas students, quite a lot at this point don't want to return to parents who are in at-risk groups or who currently have symptoms.

This seems like an appropriate balance.

Blewbell · 16/03/2020 16:13

Because the universities are packed full of scientists who have collectively said "fuck this". Aberdeen told the government they were done.
