Possibly moving to Ayr

Hi all,

We are currently in the south side of Glasgow but hoping to move to South Ayrshire (to be near the sea and also get more for our money than Glasgow). We had originally been looking at Prestwick/Troon but there’s been so little come on recently. We’ve seen a lovely house in Ayr - we’ve asked friends from the area and they’ve all said it’s a nice part of town - catchment for Granmar primary and Belmont High. Our house now under offer.

Was just wondering what people’s exoeriences are? I’m not Scottish, husband from Inverness so neither of us know the area well at all. We’ve 2 DC - 1 and 3 years old.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Agree with lots of Arhjl post. Would never choose to live in Prestwick. Overcrowded and everyone knows everyone's business. Both Ayr and Prestwick are terrible for parking but Prestwick is worse.

Watch the school catchments as they are not necessarily where you think they are. You can be in sight of Belmont but not in catchment while being over a half hour walk to Kyle as your catchment school. Not sure how Ayr Academy relocation is planned to affect all this. Historically it does not have great results but shared management with Kyle was being discussed.

Prestwick is shocking for parking.

Thanks again @Arhjl - I guess just having nice cafess/eateries in walking distance of our house.

@Dinnafashyersel - thanks a lot. We’d be grammar then Kyle albeit Kyle is a long way off!! Who knows what changes might happen
To schools between now and then. You’ve both been really helpful, thank you. Down in Ayr again just now for a second viewing so going to drive through the area and try and get a feel.

Thanks all for the input, it’s defintely been most helpful.

I live outside of Ayr, i was born and raised in the town. I lived away for many years but came home. Troon and Prestwick have the same problems as Ayr just not in the same number as they have a smaller population. South Ayr is just as nice as the other two places. Troon is nice but like Prestwick it is full of charity shops and places to eat.
I spend many hours on Ayr shore and have never once had a problem, unlike Troon, where the dog owners allow their dogs to run at you.
Ayr has a cinema, theatre, Leisure centre, gyms and many lovely parks and walks.
Good luck and welcome to Ayrshire

@lowlandlucky - that’s great to hear the perspective of someone living in the area. It’s south ayr we’re looking at (Just down from Rozelle). That sounds promising what you’ve said. We went down again this morning and had a drive around to get a better idea of the area. The weather wasn’t conducive to a walk though! Thanks v much - really helpful to get your feedback. Thank you.

Rozelle and the surrounding area are lovely. Rozelle itself has a good cafe and there is another nice one in Alloway. Racecourse road has a number of nice restaurants. It is a pleasant part of town.

@undervaluedandsad - that’s great to know, thank you. It’s great hearing from locals as to be honest, people who live outwith the area all seem to have an opinion but I honestly am not sure what it’s even based on! Feel really reassured after all this info. Thanks again.
