Has anybody’s child done crash Higher Economics?

My DD’s school has told us that it is not recommended to crash Higher Economics and that a crash in Higher Modern Studies would be more suitable as Higher Economics definitely needs the prior knowledge built up during Nat 5. I crashed Higher Economics back in the day but as I’m constantly told, I’m a dinosaur whose experience doesn’t count! So seeking the views of the wise Scots mumsnetters.......

Any advice welcome!

Ds didn't had no interest in doing so : he crashed Higher Moderm Studies alongside his AHs in Maths and Physics. But he did do Economics as a 1st year subject last year at Uni (where he's doing Politics and International Relations), alongside many others who'd also never done it before. Had a crap Macro economics lecturer which meant that even those who's studied it before struggled but that's a whole separate issue and he passed anyway Wink

I also studied Economics at Uni (ended up doing a joint French & Economics degree) having never studied it before but that was a loooooong time ago Blush so probably not very relevant Wink

DDs school don't allow any crash highers in S5 but she is crashing economics this year in S6. Chose to do the OU YASS course which is AH level but slightly less hours of study. Finding it absolutely fine to crash. In fact really enjoying the course and the OU. Made friends with a 2 women my age! Her maths is good (As at nat 5 and higher plus she's doing AH maths) and OU course assumes no previous knowledge of economics. She is crashing H Business this year and says what she lacks in previous knowledge she makes up in other aspects. DDs uni offers are likely to be unconditional or not at all so results from this year not so important. DDs school advised anyone who needed extra grades in S6 to crash subjects where school has good success e.g modern studies not philosophy and accountancy not economucs (probably because most of the business studies teachers are accoutancy trained).

No but I did in 1989! (Not terribly helpful I know).

My DS is in S5 at the moment so is looking at S6 options at the moment, he's hoping to have his passes in the bag for Uni after S5 so thinking about doing similar in crashing another Higher. I don't think his school offers Economics, just Business Studies but he's looking at Modern Studies or RMPS.

I would say that crashing in 6th year - not a problem as long as your S5 results are OK. Crashing in 5th year or needing a good pass for what you want to do in the future - risky.

Thanks everyone- that’s really helpful. I think I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a risk not worth taking and as the school has a track record in crashing Mods (as my daughter calls it!) and taking that should be the preferred course of action....

Will also take a look at Ou courses- hadn’t thought of that. Had looked at summer schools but they are horrendously expensive 😂

OU YASS courses are free to S6 state schools pupils in Scotland but I think the school needs to agree to participate plus you need to be comfortable with the distance learning but they do online tutorials and a couple of face to face ones.

I did a higher in Economics, and crash higher mod studs. Now, this was back in 2003/2004, but if things are the same these days, I would absolutely crash mod studs over economics. I just found modstud to be an easier course to get my head around, far less technical than economics which relied a lot on what I'd learnt in s3/4.
