Halò 😊 is anyone else learning Scottish Gaelic on the Duolingo app? I'm hooked and have learned a lot so far. It's done a good job of demystifying the language and so many people have signed up to learn - gives me hope that we will preserve this language. It's brilliant or should I say sgoinnel!

It's so cleverly done. Can't wait to see what Iain does next. Bloody hate the parts where I have to try to remember complex spellings though. I'm crap at that. Sad

cdtaylornats · 09/01/2020 23:30

Which dialect of Scottish Gaelic does it teach?

user1471519931 · 10/01/2020 08:07

Agree that it is so so clever! I already speak french and ages ago my partner encouraged me to sign up for Duolingo out of curiosity, which I did. But as I tried out the french one I quickly got bored and didn't fully appreciate the genius of it. I think it really comes into its own when you have hardly any prior knowledge.

As far as which dialect, I think that the volunteers came from different areas and just agreed between themselves which version to go with for each phrase.

I have the Duolingo app but didn't realise there was a Gaelic option - will have to investigate!

user1471519931 · 10/01/2020 08:45

It's quite recent @pineappledanish but sign up -the more the merrier!

I'm absolutely loving it! I'm on a 46 day steak or thereabouts but I'm going over and over the basics so I'm not as far ahead as I could be.

user1471519931 · 10/01/2020 14:34

Well done @Nyx! I'm also trying to consolidate what I'm learning so as to have a good base. Fingers crossed I will retain some it!

Anyone else just love the older lady's voice when she features? Sounds so authentic and I'm almost smelling the peat smoke in her front room. 😄

I love Duolingo, I am learning Spanish.

user1471519931 · 10/01/2020 14:39

@msf1t the spelling is so tough, agreed. 😨

So wherever you go some of what you say will be misunderstood?

user1471519931 · 10/01/2020 14:46

@cdtaylornats

No, I think if you are in the Hebrides/Scottish mainland you will be fine...it's akin to a British person being able to understand different American dialects/accents/slang etc but you might have misunderstandings with someone in Nova Scotia for example...but probably you would be able to work it out from the context...

I'm adding to this by trying out phrases on a couple of native speaker friends.

OP funnily enough I don't like the old woman's voice. There's also a man who is very abrupt. Particularly his "math" Grin

MsF1t · 10/01/2020 17:05

I know who you mean, AmIthechristmasfairy! He sounds kind of like a goat. Grin

AmIthechristmasfairy · 10/01/2020 17:16

Yes. Although you mean gobhar, surely

(Hopefully that's right Smile)

@Calyx72 leam not leat! I like as opposed to you like?

I am 20, I did Gaelic to advanced higher level in school, but have great fun playing around on the app!

Calyx72 · 11/01/2020 09:16

@SummerLove2306 Tapadh leat Smile I was on the wine so that's my excuse Grin
My Mum is staying with us just now, she is from the Western Isles, she says there are wee dialect differences but she calls it 'modern' Gaelic. She understands it all so far. She spoke english to us as babies because our Dad was not a Gaelic speaker and because the school spoke English.

I'm so happy because I remember some of it and am now learning what the words mean. Is mise Calyx, tha mi à Alba, is toil leam Duolingo gu leòr.

HopeOverFear · 12/01/2020 22:16

I downloaded this with a (at the time half hearted optimism that I will maybe remember hello and goodbye and give up) however the app is brilliant! At first I thought it was odd that the first worlds I was learning was duck and pig! Haha but it's super addictive and very clever in its structure to help you piece together.
Agree with others the writing part is brutal I sometimes just throw in a load of I's D's and G's and hope for the best 😂
Also I was mucking about with the settings and found there was a speaking exercise option that was turned off, anyone turned this one and is it worth adding?

MsF1t · 13/01/2020 10:11

Ooh! Where is the speaking exercise option? I'd love to look into that...
