where to eat in Glasgow

I'm meeting up with 2 old flatmates in Glasgow for a weekend in November. We would like to go out for a nice meal together on Saturday night but as none of us live in Glasgow anymore we have no idea of where to book. Any suggestions?

We are staying in the merchant city, we want somewhere nice, ideally no childrens menu Grin, we are 40 year olds so not too loud music, no particular dietary requirements.

Cafe Cossachok in the Merchant City. The Gannet in Finniston. The Ubiquitous Chip in the West End

Dd's boyfriend took her to Nippon kitchen a couple of months back and they loved it, the photos she sent me looked great too.
I've heard good things about Six by Nico.
I so need more money!

Grab a taxi up to this place. There are more and more amazing places to eat up Finnieston way than Merchant City now and they also tend to be more grown up. Alchemilla, Six by Nico and Ox and Finch are other good shouts. Merchant City is a bit blah now.

And I LOVE The Ubiquitous Chip. It is wonderful. I eat out a lot so it takes something really special to give me excited butterflies but The Chip totally does.

Bit out of touch, but, if everyone likes seafood - two great places are "Gamba" & "Crabshakk".
Also "Fanny Trollopes"
My favourite Italian is "La Lanterna", Hope Street. Don't blink, or you'll miss it! Very old-fashioned + very busy. If you're going on a Saturday - book ahead.

Also "Eusebi's" (West End). It's Italian - so not sure about children's menu?

I really want to try Crabshak! I’ve been to Six by Nico in Edinburgh and wasn’t overly impressed if I’m honest. Not sure if the one in Glasgow would be different.

Crabshakk's food is fabulous! Very popular/busy. Again, would advise to book.
Crab cakes, Scallops/anchovy sauce (trust me). Squid Tempura.
Don't book upstairs - it gets VERY warm.

If you like Indian then Koolba is in the merchant city and has won lots of awards. I absolutely love it! Used to live in the merchant city and that was my treat meal every month!

I'd take an uber to 111 by Nico which I actually prefer to Six by Nico although both amazing.

Ox and Finch
Porter and Rye
Fancy Trollopes
Two Fat Ladies

All good as well

Alchemical has just been named one of the top restaurants in UK. Jay Rayner and Joanna Blythman also both recommend it.

Aliceinwanderland · 11/11/2019 21:35

*Alchemilla. Bloody autocorrect!

BigGlasses · 11/11/2019 23:06

So many suggestions, thank you! I’m off to start googling menus. We are quite happy to travel about a bit, I just mentioned merchant city as that is where the hotel is (and is close to where our student flat was in the 90s) . I’m soooo looking forward to it, we haven’t got together in ages

Alchemilla is awful in my opinion. Full of lots of middle aged people who never go out in town and drink too much and are a total pain.

Crabshakk is fab. Never had a bad night in there but it is tiny so not a lot of elbow room- or if you're particularly rotund it might be a bit awkward. If you're foodies then could recommend Cail Bruiach.
