Looking for nice areas around Glasgow

Hi all,

My family and I have been living down south for almost seven years, but with baby number two on the way I'd really like to move back to Scotland.
Most of our family/friends are in Glasgow so we'd like to be around there. Somewhere with a nice family feel and good schools for DD. Also needs to be within half an hour commute to the city centre for when I go back to the work. Any suggestions of nice areas to look at?

Bridge of weir, Houston, Quarriers Village and Kilmacolm. Smile I live in one of them after many years in Glasgow and I don’t think I’ll ever leave! One of the things I love most is the old railway line that has been turned into a cycle/ walking path. Great for walking, running, dog walking, cycling.

east Dunbartonshire. You have a Bearsden/ Milngavie which are fairly pricey but with good amenities. Or Lenzie which is less pricey, but good schools . Fewer amenities but 10 minutes by train to Glasgow city centre and less than an hour to Edinburgh

It depends on your budget. A lot of my friends have moved to Bearsden/Milngavie for rhe schools.

And of course East Renfrewshire eg Clarkston, Giffnock have great schools & stations. Mearns is a bit further out & car commute likely to be more than an hour.

I'd recommend East Renfrewshire (Giffnock, Clarkston, Busby). Nice amenities, great schools (both primary and secondary) and easy commute into Glasgow (to get to the city centre: 17-20 minutes by, 30-odd minutes by bus, 15 minutes by car).

Darkbendis · 29/09/2019 22:58

*17-20 minutes by train

reginafelangee · 29/09/2019 23:04

Bearsden, milngavie, east Renfrewshire

I second @PARunnerGirl .... Houston, Bridge of Weir or Kilmacolm... close enough to Glasgow and airport for commuting, but feel semi rural... good schools too....

I'd recommend Shawlands/Pollokshields/Newlands/Strathbungo (Southside of Glasgow). Good transport links, good community, lots of lovely parks and good schools Smile

OtraCosaMariposa · 30/09/2019 08:06

Kilmacolm is really nice, I agree. But the catchment secondary is Port Glasgow which is... not as nice. Do most parents opt for placing requests?

Elllicam · 30/09/2019 08:07

Eaglesham is nice or Strathaven is lovely. Both have good schools.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 30/09/2019 08:17

I think most people living in Kilmalcolm probably send their children to st Columbia’s the private school in Kilmalcolm

Clangus00 · 30/09/2019 08:22

How about Ayrshire? West Kilbride, Troon, Prestwick.

AgeingDurannie · 30/09/2019 09:16

@OtraCosaMariposa and @Sweetpotatoaddict ... lots of parents in Kilmacolm do send kids to St Columba's (private), but also through placement to Gryffe High School in Houston as well as Port Glasgow (catchment).... I don't know much about Port Glasgow High other than that it moved to a brand new campus building in 2013....

Depends on your budget and if you want to live in the city, suburbs, village or rural. Or even near the sea.

Cleverplayonwords · 05/10/2019 10:09

Look at bearsden and milngavie if you have the budget.
