Best places in Glasgow?

Hey! Looking to move to Glasgow, budget is max £600 pm for a 3 bedroom. (Preferable a house with a garden) I’m looking for recommendations for towns near Glasgow which have a great supply of supermarkets, shops, kids after school activities/ clubs, soft plays, things to do with the family etc. I have a 5yo girl and a 2 yo boy. Been looking at Motherwell so far and that seems like it would be perfect to live but would anyone recommend anywhere else? Thanks ☺️

Is Strathaven too far out?

Do you need to be on a train line or is being close to a motorway important?

Bookworm4 · 30/08/2019 21:13

Paisley, only 10 mins on train to Glasgow

SuziGeo · 30/08/2019 21:16

Hamilton could be worth looking at or Paisley. With both of these (and Motherwell) you just have to be careful which area you live in. All have nice parts and dodgy parts.

SylvanianFrenemies · 30/08/2019 21:19

Can you give any more info on.where you want to be near?

East Kilbride and Kirkintilloch would tick.your boxes and are fairly affordable.

SylvanianFrenemies · 30/08/2019 21:21

Paisley is another good suggestion.

Agree about investigating individual areas. All of these towns have less than desirable spots.

Thanks everyone! So I currently live in Dunoon and there isn’t very much here such as shops, etc and living in Glasgow would be a cheaper way of living, as in supermarkets are cheaper, more choice of after school clubs/ activities etc. Would love to live within 10 miles of the centre, but my main focus is having better choices for the kids. I know that some places have bad areas but that doesn’t concern me too much as every place has their bad places... hope this makes sense ☺️

If you're wanting to be close in to town, and given your budget, don't discount places like Cardonald or Mosspark in Glasgow. Shawlands too - but not sure you'd get anything in your budget.

EK or Paisley might be your best bet.

youllhavehadyourtea · 30/08/2019 21:55

I agree with Mosspark or Cardonald.

maybe even Renfrew

prettybird · 30/08/2019 22:00

SIL lives in Mosspark and has 3 beds and a garden. She owns her place but there are lots of rentals in the area.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 30/08/2019 22:09

I’m sorry but I think you’ll struggle to rent a 3 bedroom house for £600 pm in or around Glasgow.

possibly try paisley or renfrew. Or the east end of Glasgow.

Croftend Avenue, Glasgow, G44

Joanna949 · 30/08/2019 22:30

Thanks for this, but we do have pets.

The property would also need to accept dss as I’m currently on benefits until I find a placement to help with uni (working towards a social work diploma) thank you everyone so far for recommendations, all in all I just want my kids to have more opportunities than they have over here ☺️ So far I have seen in Motherwell that my little ones can do gymnastics for around £25pm plus supermarkets are cheaper (Asda, Aldi, Lidl etc compared to Morrisons here what barely has anything) plus there is a shopping centre, parks, soft play, activity centres etc in Motherwell, if anyone could give examples of what is available in each area mentioned it would be highly appreciated!

Where are you at Uni? Travelling in from Motherwell is a grind.

Timeandtune · 31/08/2019 07:45

I agree that £600 pcm is v light for most of Glasgow. Have you looked at Homes for Good? They are a social enterprise letting agency so their rents are a bit cheaper. You could also consider applying for social housing. I would suggest North LAN would be your best bet.

user1487194234 · 31/08/2019 11:05

Difficult at that level of rent, with pets and particularly on benefits
You will have to look a bit further afield I think

user1487194234 · 31/08/2019 11:06

Sorry posted too soon
Social housing might be your best bet
Or at least point you in the right direction

Joanna949 · 01/09/2019 20:03

I’m studying with the open university so no need to travel, I don’t mind being 10-15 miles away from the city centre ☺️ Thank you all so far!
