Who do we think will take over?

Jesus. I’d there anyone even suitable 🙄

dementedma · 28/08/2019 18:12

That's a shame. She provided the only opposition to the SNP who must be laughing themselves sick. And who can forget "Och, sit down, Nicola!"

AgentProvocateur · 28/08/2019 18:19

I'm not sure that I could name many (any?) other Tory MSPs... And where are SLab - have they imploded?

NoHummus · 28/08/2019 18:22

I can't even name any of the Tory MSPs, other than Jackson Carlaw but I doubt he'd want or get the job on a permanent basis. So no idea!

HirplesWithHaggis · 28/08/2019 18:55

Annie Wells has been suggested. But not by a Tory. Grin

There's 31 of them, Murdo anyone?

OP posts:
prettybird · 29/08/2019 09:26

Didn't Murdo Fraser suggest that the Scottish Conservative Party be set up as one independent from separate to the Conservative Party Wink

A proposal like that may be well be revisited to distance themselves from the toxic Johnson Party Hmm

WaxOnFeckOff · 29/08/2019 11:01

I'm not a Tory but that's really disappointing. Effective opposition makes the best politics and she just didn't put up with nicola 's snash.

A real blow for the anti independence side too.

HirplesWithHaggis · 29/08/2019 14:16

Murdo is actually 2/1 favourite at Ladbrokes! Grin

I'm not a natural Conservative politician but Ruth Davidson is awesome. A strong, effective opposition leader who consistently challenged the SNP and pulled them up when things were going wrong.

I do completely understand her reasons for going. Life has changed for her, she has a new baby and is getting married. There's a possibility she wants to have another child soonish too. She'll be sadly missed challenging Ms Sturgeon in parliament though.

OtraCosaMariposa · 30/08/2019 08:03

I actually think Annie Wells should be given more prominence as she challenges so many people's expectations of what a Tory looks like. Bit like Ruth - lots of people were shocked that she was leading her party as an openly lesbian woman.

breaconoptimist · 30/08/2019 15:17

It’s a sign of how sound her decision-making is that Ruth didn’t fancy giving up vital years of her son’s life to the quagmire that is politics now.

strangerthongs · 30/08/2019 17:02

I liked Ruth Davidson and I'm sorry she's gone.

Very few other politicians, of any party, that I like.

Superjaggy · 30/08/2019 17:13

I'm not a Tory supporter but I agree that she was one of very few opposition politicians worth their salt. Both the Scottish and UK parliaments would benefit hugely from having decent opposition parties with effective leaders.

On saying that, Ruth had had to change her stance on so many things lately, her position would have been completely untenable if she'd had to flip flop yet again and openly support Johnson's latest trick. I agree that there will be some Scottish Tories angling for a breakaway from the UK party now!

She's done a lot for women (and gay women at that) in politics though and I'm glad she's able to focus on what matters most to her right now.

prettybird · 30/08/2019 19:13

I actually rather liked Annabel Goldie (not that I ever voted for her Wink) as I felt she was a pragmatic, yet ethical politician (if that's not an oxymoron Wink) who was prepared to put country before party.

Unlike some of the current crop of Conservatives Angry - but I'll give Ruth the credit for distancing herself from them and getting out while she could.

I agree: for a healthy democracy, you do need decent opposition to hold the government to account.

Plush, in Scotland's case, the unicameral set-up means that all the parties elected have to pull their weight on the various committees that scrutinise legislation.

Don't like the tories and couldn't stand Ruth Davidson but she has stuck to her principles and I admire her for that.
