I know there's one in Glasgow but are there any others? I need to settle an argument and I can't find a definitive answer by Googling (yet!)

Probably Steiner schools won't have a uniform?

LoopyGremlin · 16/08/2019 13:54

James Gillespie’s in Edinburgh doesn’t have a uniform.

Hyndland In Glasgow

Celebelly · 16/08/2019 14:01

Is the one in Glasgow Hyndland? That had no uniform when I was at school, which was granted some time ago...

WaxOnFeckOff · 16/08/2019 14:09

Possibly also a difference between having a uniform and enforcing it being worn. I think it's more enforced nowadays. I went to Firrhill in the late 70s early 80s and there was a uniform but the majority of pupils didn't wear it. I think it's different now though.

Auldspinster · 16/08/2019 14:10

Boroughmuir didn't when i was there but it's been reintroduced.

Loads of schools in rural Scotland don't have a uniform, but have rules, like dark trousers/skirts but no jeans etc. I went to a school that had no uniform but option to buy a school jumper, it was pretty casual tbh.

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/08/2019 14:16

Hyndland still doesn't, Dd finished there earlier in the year.

museumum · 16/08/2019 14:22

Boroughmuir firrhill etc all wear uniform now. Gillespies only state school I think that doesn’t. In my opinion the Gillespies kids look better (less scruffy) than all other local state school pupils who all wear their uniforms badly (I’ll fitting, inappropriate for the weather, trying to assert independence with weird tie knots etc).

OtraCosaMariposa · 16/08/2019 15:45

The only two I've heard of are Hyndland and Gillespie's in the state sector. All the private schools round this way are a lot stricter on uniform than state schools.

It's changed days - I was at state secondary in the 80s and only around 40% of us wore uniform. Kids wore what they liked, no blazers, no ties. And a lot of the staff were very scruffy too.

Now all schools seem to have much stricter dress codes and that's a good thing.

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 16/08/2019 15:57

My secondary school in Scotland never had a uniform. They only introduced one in the last year. The pupils and the parents all voted overwhelmingly to bring in a uniform.

WaxOnFeckOff · 16/08/2019 16:55

I'm ambivalent about wearing uniform and the apparent impact upon schools tbh. However if there is a policy then I think it should be worn and applied sensibly. I'd hate to get into the stuff that appears in England about hair cuts and non standard trousers etc which we seem to have not applied in Scotland.

But, in times where workplaces are becoming less formal, I wonder if it is really the right thing. I used to wear a suit to work every day, now it's pretty casual, even the directors etc might wear a shirt but teamed with semi casual trousers and no tie. Jeans and t-shirts are much more commonplace. I tend to stick to trousers and blouses still, mainly because I still have those in my wardrobe so might as well ge the wear out of them.

At the school my DC go to, the headmaster is very strict about wearing a blazer, yet most of the girls wear a skirt which barely covers their arse Hmm

Lidlfix · 16/08/2019 18:34

Moreprosecco that sounds just like where I teach and the school my DDs attend. Very smart in blazers and ties yet looks like they have forgotten a key garment - their skirt! Still I have a history of gravity defying hemlines and still like a mini due to legs being my redeeming feature. Cannae lie proud moment when my colleague mistook me for an S6 pupil (from behind) I don't wear my black blazer, jersey skirt and ballet flats to work unless I need an ego boost Grin

MoreProseccoNow · 16/08/2019 20:04

Ha! That's funny, @Lidlfix - I wish I had good enough legs for a mini skirt! Mine are shocking!

Uniformia · 17/08/2019 00:11

Thanks all. I’m not that bothered about uniform but my friend was trying to convince me that Hyndland was the only secondary school in Scotland that doesn’t have one and I wasn’t convinced that was the case.

I remain unconvinced that uniform aids learning
Buy it all for my secondary aged kids but leave it up to them

MrsAmaretto · 17/08/2019 13:03

All schools in Shetland are non uniform - so that’s 2 high schools and 6 Junior highs
