Moving on up... Uni/CollegeS5/S6/S4/Work

Hey everyone

It's that time of year... school returns within the next week or 2, others will be preparing to start college or uni. Some will be moving out. Some will start work... so here's the thread for those in that position.

For me Dd is going into second year at Dundee Uni. She did a fantastic first year. She's off to be a mentor to those starting uni this year. Ds has just gone into S6 and has the world to consider in the next year.

Me... I need to find a job after losing my job in June! Done in quite a callous way that I am taking my time to be kind!

When we went to open day in Aberdeen we just parked in the campus but went by train for offer holders day, that was during the week right? If she is planning on looking at the halls, she could always park up at those and walk down to the Uni.

Jodri · 15/02/2020 19:52

Thanks waxonfeckoff, yes I think it’s a Wednesday. Parking at the halls is a good idea she’s planning on applying for them. Would love to take the train but they have a regular habit of being cancelled at the moment. I’m going with her so she won’t be on her own.

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/02/2020 20:24

My DS is the year below prettybirds doing the same course. He's loving Aberdeen and settled in well. He's in halls at the moment and currently looking at options for next year.

It's a nice walk from the halls to the Uni, but then we had a nice sunny day for offer holders. DS and I went together :)

Lots of work on the line every Sunday between Dundee and Aberdeen so increases from 2 hour to 3 hour journey :(

Alittlewornout · 20/02/2020 17:35

Did just received an unconditional for maths at St Andrew's! Absolutely over the moon. We have cracked open a bottle if bubbly, don't think much physics assignment will get done tonight!

Aurea · 20/02/2020 18:08

That's fab alittlewornout. Well done to your DC!

Alittlewornout · 20/02/2020 18:18

Thank you Aurea she is delighted! Hoping for 2and year entry if her AHs go as planned!

ClerkMaxwell · 20/02/2020 18:23

Great news. DD still waiting for StA but not too hopeful as from tsr it looked like offers went out early in the week to Scottish applicants. Anyone know how long between offers and rejections?

Alittlewornout · 20/02/2020 18:30

Will keep my fingers crossed for her Clerk. This is not gospel but dd said there was about 2 weeks for physics but her biology friends said rejections came out the day before the offers. It all seems a but random and I dont think all the offers came out on the same day but I am not 100 per cent sure.
Our son is also buzzing as he is already there so at least we can visit 2 for the price of one!

ClerkMaxwell · 20/02/2020 19:51

Really nice that your DS is pleased to have his sister at the same uni. Certainly easier for the drop off and pickups for you. Not sure any of my 3 would be pleased to bump into each other in the bars though.

FluffytheGoldfish · 20/02/2020 20:05

Well done for your dd Alittlewornout and good luck ClerkMaxwell.
We are heading up to the Physics offers day at St Andrews this Saturday so will see what Dd2 make of it.

Aurea · 20/02/2020 20:28

Hi Fluffy
Congrats on the physics offer.

A good pal of mine's son has just received a rejection for physics at St As despite achieving 5As at Higher and 3As predicted at AH. Her DC is a little gutted actually. Perhaps it was his PS, but he also got an Oxford interview so who knows....?

FluffytheGoldfish · 20/02/2020 21:37

Dd has her 5 As and was predicted AAB for her AHs (which is weird as at parents night he said an A for maths and in my profession opinion it is likely to be a very high A).The area we live in though gives us a contextual offer which I think may have made a difference. Dd refused to apply to Oxbridge wants to stay in Scotland.

Aurea · 20/02/2020 21:48

Thanks Fluffy. Maybe that's the reason why. My friend's son attends a state school without a contextual offer.

More importantly, that's fantastic for your DD. You must be very chuffed!

My younger son is also hoping to apply to St As for CS but he has a couple of years to go yet...

Alittlewornout · 21/02/2020 07:44

Thanks for all the good wishes. @ClerkMaxwell I get what you mean about siblings in the same town, but they are genuinely very close and actually like each other. My Dh and I are both only children so had no real clue about sibling relationships but my friends tell me my kids growing up were quite unusual!! Dont get me wrong they still fell out, and definitely had their moments but they liked being together. We are a very small family so I think they appreciate having each other.
Mind you my ds might be less than impressed if he catches his sister in any compromising situations with a boy on a night out!!😂

Jodri · 21/02/2020 09:32

Waxonfeckoff, I couldn’t read the full telegraph article as it wanted me to sign up for a trial period; did the son get a place in medical school, just not Edinburgh?
My dd2 is a straight A student but has yet to hear from Edinburgh and Strathclyde. She’s still got offers from 3 universities though.

WaxOnFeckOff · 21/02/2020 11:17

I don't think the article answered on that point johdri, obviously medicine requires an interview too so that's maybe not the best example.

Good luck with the applications :)

The generic point is that when spaces for Scottish students are so limited, it can lead to spaces being given to higher fee paying applicants who might have poorer results. It's not a level playing field.

Jodri · 21/02/2020 11:27

Yes I agree with you that it’s not a level playing field at all and definitely not the holy grail that us plebs are led to believe.

Groovee · 14/03/2020 21:41

Ds has been successful in getting into the college course above what he currently does twice a week. The reports from the tutor (as he's there on the school link they do). He is still very keen on trying for an apprenticeship though.

Dd well! Can Dundee not take her back for her placement!! I definitely do not miss her "need" to turn everything into a debate. However she's been getting good results in her essays and she's resitting they disastrous placement from December with close tutor advice and support after this current one. She is stressing that the schools close though as all overseas placements have been recalled.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/03/2020 23:11

That sounds tough with your DD @Groovee, hope it all get's sorted out.

At least it's good news for DS :)

I think I'll have DS2 home soon. Classes now cancelled but the attractions of playing house with his girlfriend while having no classes might dictate when he wants to actually pack up and com home...

DS1 not expecting to be back into Strathclyde until September either.

How is everyone else doing ?

prettybird · 15/03/2020 09:16

Ds has work up in Aberdeen to keep him there - but heaven knows what will happen to his shifts if the footfall in the shop decreases.

He's worrying because he's had a cough for a month and thought he had a temperature was hot on Friday and thinks he might have infected us and more concerningly, his 83 year old grandfather (with whom he went to Murrayfield last weekend). We've reminded him that self-isolation is only if you have a new cough and he's confirmed that he didn't in fact have a temperature.

It's hard to reassure and comfort them from a distance of 180 miles. Sad

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/03/2020 11:52

it is tough and that is what i've been saying amongst all the panic about getting DC home from Unis etc. It's not that the risk is necessarily any different , it's just that some of them are still pretty young and being able to deal with lack of essential supplies (pasta!) and taking proper care of themselves if they are ill is a concern.

I've just had a bad migraine and spent most of yesterday in and out of bed sleeping, now tired and lethargic - all very normal for a migraine....but, i also have a mild temperature but no cough or breathing issues. Not leaving the house today anyway as not feeling up to it, but thinking I may need to self isolate as I can work from home anyway. Pretty sure I don't have it though there is a suspected case at work with someone who has been in Italy in the last few weeks so I guess maybe? Confused

Jodri · 15/03/2020 12:57

Yes I’m finding it all a wee bit worrying. Trying hard to keep calm and (sort of) carry on , making wee adjustments to my daily routine with all non essential engagements and trips out are off for me.
I reckon my dd1 will be home from uni by next weekend. All non professional 1st and 2nd year exams have been cancelled at her institution. Her boyfriend is trying to get home to Spain today before it lockdowns (always room for him here but he wants to be with his family).

Alittlewornout · 15/03/2020 17:56

Ds just received an email from St Andrew's after spring break on the 30th March there will be no face to face uni contact for the rest if the semester all lectures and exams etc will be online.

Groovee · 15/03/2020 19:44

Dd has had word from Dundee saying they are closed. She's done all her course work it's just the placement.
