Hey everyone

It's that time of year... school returns within the next week or 2, others will be preparing to start college or uni. Some will be moving out. Some will start work... so here's the thread for those in that position.

For me Dd is going into second year at Dundee Uni. She did a fantastic first year. She's off to be a mentor to those starting uni this year. Ds has just gone into S6 and has the world to consider in the next year.

Me... I need to find a job after losing my job in June! Done in quite a callous way that I am taking my time to be kind!

😂😂 Thanks

Lidlfix · 04/12/2019 13:50

DD3 received her first conditional offer last night. Only needs a B in any Higher so hopefully she can achieve that. Not her first choice uni or course but she was delighted to hear so quickly after pressing send.

ClerkMaxwell · 04/12/2019 14:01

It's good to get an offer so quickly. DD had hoped for a quick offer from Glasgow but has heard nothing (applied 4 weeks ago).

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/12/2019 14:22

That's great lidl It's good to have something with an achievable condition in the bag, even if it isn't their first choice.

Hope for good news for everybody soon Smile it would be nice to hear something positive before Christmas.

In Wax news, DS1 still averaging about 90% in class work and has no exams again, still struggling socially and on waiting list for help but certainly not getting worse. Hoping to persuade him to get organised for some kind of employment/placement over the summer as it would do him a lot of good.

Ds2 loving student life and seems to be doing well although was a bit worried about performance in one of his exams. He's been to see the support services eventually but not sure specifically what is in place as trying to get info from him is like herding cats. Has lots of new FB friends, most of which seem to be female.

emummy · 05/12/2019 19:33

That’s great Lidl.
Good news here finally, DD has an interview for Aberdeen, so fingers crossed for that. And here’s hoping we can survive the stress!

Lidlfix · 05/12/2019 20:49

Thanks folks, it's Abertay that have responded so quickly and although she prefers the courses she's applied for at Dundee- as a city it was the right fit for her. Lovely to hear your updates Wax for both your DSs. DD1 passing teaching placement, DD2 living the high life in the West End loving being a Politics student when it's all kicking off ConfusedDD4 applying her fake tan rather than self. I fear the prelims might be rude awakening.

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/12/2019 20:56

It's definitely an interesting time to be studying politics!

Dundee was quite late with their responses for both my two. Not last but not early either. What has DD3 applied for Lidl? I'm sure you've probably said but my memory is shocking. It would be good to get an offer from her preferred course at Dundee but she has an offer that she'd be happy with in a place she wants to be so it's a decent position to be in. And Grin re the fake tan.

Lidlfix · 05/12/2019 22:39

Were they offers Wax ? DD1 was March before she received an Unconditional from Dundee. DD3 has applied for Social Work and (I think) History and Something Social Subjects related. Just wondering if it's a no news can be good news scenario if they send out rejections first. She exceeds the requirements for the Social Work course quite significantly but I'd imagine that's one where Personal Statements are important.

DD4 will be 15 doing her Higher prelims. I sat my first Standard Grade on my 16th birthday- she is just so young. Ready academically but not emotionally Sad. But she'd have been bored senseless if I'd deferred her. She's already talking about a gap year so she doesn't spend the majority of her first year at uni under 18. If her Oompa Loompa butt gets in gear and gets that far.

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/12/2019 22:57

It was one of each Lidl so I don't think it makes a difference. One Unconditional offer and one rejection. For DS1, edinburgh was his last one to come in and for DS2 it was Stirling.

I think it is tough when they are so young. Some of DS2s flat mates/friends only just turning 18 now but to be fair they mostly drink in as it's too expensive to be out (so he tells me).

DSs (and me) are summer birthdays, it just makes it easier when you have no decision to make about deferral etc, at least that is one thing I don't have to feel guilty about doing the wrong thing about!

Best of luck for the prelims and hope the other offers get a move on.

I think it's a bit of shame actually re some of the rejections DS2 got as they didn't really give him a chance with a conditional when he had issues that should mean he got a contextual offer and also in some cases he already met the minimum without his 6th year results. At the end of the day, he ended up with an AH and 2 As, 2 Bs and a C at higher. granted not in one sitting but given Uni have assessed him as needing extra time in exams and he didn't get that at school, I think he did really well. I don't suppose it really matters in the end as he got a good offer from where he wanted to be and seems to be thriving. It would have been better for his confidence not to have 4 outright rejections though.

Alittewornout · 06/12/2019 15:50

Well done everyone on the offers. Not been a good week for poor Dd she failed her driving test was rejected from Oxford( expected so not that bothered) and boy issues, which are so complicated I don’t fully understand but have tried to nod in the right places and make sympathetic noises!!🤣 However she is brighter today and is off to a friend’s birthday get together.
Ds almost finished first semester of 3rd year. Thinks he has done well which is good because he admits he was really worried about how he would do as so many scare stories about 3rd year.
Best of luck to those with exams before Christmas whether at school or uni. Gosh this parenting lark doesn’t get any easier does it???

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/12/2019 16:29

Indeed it doesn't Alittle It's normal not to pass first time but on top of other things, it probably feels a bit harder than usual. Hope she manages to pick herself up and enjoy Christmas.

Alittewornout · 06/12/2019 17:42

Thanks Wax to be fair she a naturally cheerful girl, so never down for long. We have a nice weekend planned and as she says next week can only be an improvement😂

Lidlfix · 06/12/2019 18:37

DD1 passed first time, DD2 4th DD3 on the build up to test 3. Still a bit to go before they beat my record. Which I like say demonstrates my resilience Wink.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/12/2019 19:26

I passed first time (after about a dozen lessons) but rest of household were 2nd time.

I had a bit of a "fuck it" moment on my test. I had to come round a fairly tight bend and I clipped the kerb with the tyre, presumed i'd then failed so probably became over reckless...I even overtook a digger on the duel carriageway...got back to the test centre and got told I'd passed. I flooded the engine later that day and basically hated driving and didn't drive for many many years. Maybe better to have more lessons and more tests :o

Alittewornout · 06/12/2019 20:45

I took a few attempts too! I keep telling her all the best drivers fail first time. Which I have to say she agrees with as she always says I am a better driver than her dad( who passed first time.) Glad she thinks I am good at something!

prettybird · 07/12/2019 00:01

Ds' test is the week after next, up in Aberdeen. I personally don't think he's ready Xmas Hmm but ds says he is going to get a few extra lessons (over and above his weekly ones) in the run up. (At least I'm not paying Grin - technically his grandad is, but ds doesn't ask him for the cost of every lesson).

Passed 1st time (down in Stevenage) but dh got "No Pass Cass" so failed 1st time for stopping to readjust his rear view mirror 20m into his test. (Although we have a friend who did pass 1st time with "No Pass Cass" Wink)

If he doesn't pass, I'll be having to stay sober over Christmas so that I can take him out for practice drives in the couple of days he is down here Xmas Hmm

FluffytheGoldfish · 12/12/2019 07:43

Just had a call from Dd1 from outside our polling station asking how you actually voteXmas Grin. She has been quite active campaigning for our MP and will be spending the morning as the partys official person outside the polling station. Now if she would just put as much effort into finding a job.
To be honest I think she has been quite down about giving up university despite it being the right decision. Getting back into politics has really brightened her up.
In other news DD2 has had another unconditional for Physics from Dundee. Still favouring Glasgow but is thinking she might now visit some of the other applicants days.

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/12/2019 17:02

DS2 just heading out to vote - his first vote. Ds1 and I just been and DH went before work.

Glad to hear that DD is feeling a bit more upbeat Fluffy, these dark nights don't help and well done to DD2 :)

I'm now contemplating whether I have done a brilliant or shit job of parenting. DS2 finished exams on 3rd December and he's just said he's now not coming back until next Tuesday as there is no point coming down now and going back up for his flat Christmas meal on Monday. I entirely agree with him. Then he is heading back up on the 6th Jan.

Obviously chuffed that he is settled up there but feeling a bit put out, I imagine it's like when your cat prefers living next door...

I'm trying to see it as a positive thing but it does feel like it's quite final and our house will never be his home again.

I'm sure I'll be back moaning and wishing him away again within two days of him arriving back though :o

FluffytheGoldfish · 12/12/2019 20:50

It did take us all a bit to readjust to Dd1 being home full time.
Anyway apparently Dd1 is not coming home tonight as she is off to the official count! The MP has assured her that they will make sure Dd1 is sorted with a lift home and won't have to try and get home on her own.

Lidlfix · 18/12/2019 20:13

Another conditional for DD3 of a B at any Higher for Cali. So hopefully she might even have choices next year. Christmas Ball for DD3 sand DD4 they both look so gorgeous I could hardly speak. Hosting afters so I'm sure I will find my words (and the sound bar and speakers later) Confused

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/12/2019 22:53

Well done lidl fingers crossed for Dundee still though. I'm sure your young ladies looked stunning and lovely that they got to go together. Hope your ears aren't ringing too much tomorrow.

DS2 been home a day, he's lost his glasses - again. Has a t-shirt that is ripped to shreds and wants to know how to get the smell of sick out of his leather jacket Hmm. I've done the washing and he has 9 odd socks..and I now have no hair conditioner left. strewth! Add that to the broken phone and laptop and we are doing well, so just an optician appointment to add to the dentist appointment that we need to fit in over Christmas. I do miss him, but out of sight, out of mind isn't a bad thing sometimes.

Alittewornout · 19/12/2019 21:32

Well done Lidl Dd! Wax your post made me chuckle, my ds is home from uni too. So far my washing machine is about to expire from overuse and I think I will be seated customer of the week at the supermarket as I am now there almost daily- he eats constantly!!!
On the plus side he has cooked for us, is great company and still gives the best hugs.
Dd just told us she received an unconditional offer from Strathclyde today so a nice wee boost before Christmas.
Wax hope socks are on your sons Santa list???😉

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/12/2019 22:22

Brill news Alittle. No, he isn't getting any new socks, he'll just have to wear odd pairs for now. He's already costing me too much in repairs and replacements. I know it's partly a symptom of his dyspraxia, but he is going to bankrupt us all!

He now has a girlfriend and given his penchant for breaking things and general disaster, DH is panicking that we'll be grand-parents by this time next year, not that we'd find out until the child was about 3 right enough...

Alittewornout · 20/12/2019 07:41

Oh Wax our son constantly breaks things too! This year when we were on holiday and he was at home he decided to hoover out the debris in the hot tub whilst it was still wet!🙈 New hoover had to be purchased!
Also left his lap top somewhere and no surprise when he went back it had gone!
Maybe condoms from Santa?!!

WaxOnFeckOff · 20/12/2019 15:58

Maybe condoms from Santa?!!

I'm hoping he didn't get through the 100 that DH packed amongst his stuff when he went away in September...
