Moving on up... Uni/CollegeS5/S6/S4/Work

Hey everyone

It's that time of year... school returns within the next week or 2, others will be preparing to start college or uni. Some will be moving out. Some will start work... so here's the thread for those in that position.

For me Dd is going into second year at Dundee Uni. She did a fantastic first year. She's off to be a mentor to those starting uni this year. Ds has just gone into S6 and has the world to consider in the next year.

Me... I need to find a job after losing my job in June! Done in quite a callous way that I am taking my time to be kind!

I've no idea which economics he is doing this year but he says he has sat two tests so far and got over 70% in each and he had a big economics book with him when he came home so fingers crossed :)

prettybird · 25/10/2019 17:20

Microeconomics was in the 1st semester and ds actually enjoyed it (he didn't think he would) - the lecturer was quite good. Macro economics is 2nd semester and as I say, if it is the same lecturer, he is crap Angry

haggisaggis · 28/10/2019 16:45

Ooh I wonder if it was macroeconomics my ds took last year? He complained about a really bad lecturer in economics too. It was 2nd semester. Ds is also doing philosophy this semester and assures me that attending the lectures is not important..

prettybird · 28/10/2019 17:35

It will have been haggisaggis - microeconomics was in the 1st semester. Ds says he was so disorganised, contradicted and corrected himself mid-lecture, used an old fashioned OHP that he would draw the graphs on and then scribble over them because he'd got it wrong, so that the students didn't have a clue what he was on about.

As far as we could make out, more than half the class had to re-sit Shock - what an indictment of the quality of the lecturer. Angry

prettybird · 28/10/2019 17:43

And Grinat the non attendance of Philosophy lectures Wink

WaxOnFeckOff · 28/10/2019 19:35

Ah, so it looks like my poor baby boy might have an issue next term. Hopefully the lecturer got sacked moved on over the summer.

prettybird · 28/10/2019 20:23

Forewarned is forearmed Wink

Just advice him to get the necessary books/do the reading and make friends with people who've done A level/AH Economics Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 28/10/2019 20:35

I think he may need new friends!

prettybird · 28/10/2019 20:47

It probably didn't help ds that although he only needed 35% in the exam to pass the module, he had to sacrifice some of his revision time to re-do his exam philosophy essay when his laptop was stolen. Sad

But he go it so it was all good Smile

Just advise your ds to do his best on his essays and any interim tests so he's not relying too much on the final exam.

WaxOnFeckOff · 28/10/2019 21:17

I can tell him all sorts of useful stuff and he will agree with me and then get into his own funk and do none of it :o I can but try though.

prettybird · 28/10/2019 23:44

GrinGrinGrin True Wink

I'm not even sure that ds has properly learnt his lesson about backing up properly/using the cloud Hmm

FluffytheGoldfish · 05/11/2019 18:28

So that was Dd2'S UCAS form away today. She is doing a performance unit in music and has been waiting for them to confirm it is AH she is doing. So all sorted and now she just needs to wait and see.

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/11/2019 20:56

Exciting stuff fluffy . I was just booking panto tickets just now and remembered that Ds got his first offer in, which was from his favourite uni (and it turns out only offer), the night we went to Panto last year. He was so chuffed and also lost his phone then got it back, crushed to smithereens after it got stuck in the chair mechanism at the panto....it was a day of highs and lows... :o

FluffytheGoldfish · 06/11/2019 16:08

It is very exciting and acknowledgements from Edinburgh within 2 hours and Glasgow later in the evening! She just wants at least one offer by December as a Christmas present Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/11/2019 17:37

In my experience, Glasgow will make an early offer if she meets the entry criteria already. What is it she is applying for again?

Alittewornout · 06/11/2019 17:47

Exciting times fluffy! Dd got unconditional offer from Edinburgh within 3 weeks but all quiet since then!! Yes Wax is right hopefully a quick offer from Glasgow.🤞

FluffytheGoldfish · 06/11/2019 19:33

Did someone say Glasgow and early offer?
Unconditional for integrated masters in Physics and Astrophysics arrived at 6pm! Having a celebration take away tonight. She is over the moon as this is her first choice. She is having a think about whether to accept straight away or wait and see what other offers she gets(has had acknowledgements from everywhere except Strathclyde). Lots of happy people in the Fluffy house.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/11/2019 20:34

Brilliant! Have fun celebrating! I wouldn't accept yet, there is no advantage to doing that as far as I can see, given that a lot won't be able to have firm offers until after results day. I'd wait and go to offer holders days maybe for first and second choice. Ds1 turned down Glasgow for Strathclyde as the course and atmosphere seemed a better fit for him. Or maybe it was just because Strathclyde was closer to the train station....

FluffytheGoldfish · 06/11/2019 21:02

She does like Strathclyde but they don't have an Astrophysics degree there although the Advanced research course has tempted her. She has been doing AH labs in both Glasgow and Strathclyde so is now comfortable at both but I would like her to look at some of her further away choices.
But if we were going for easiest to get to Glasgow wins hands down as she will stay on the bus for one more stop than does for High school. She lunches in Byres Rd most days she is not on perfect duty.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/11/2019 21:31

It's definitely horses for courses. It's good if they find the best fit for themselves. DS1 had 4 unconditionals but in the end, didn't want to move away so that really left Glasgow and Strathclyde as the only ones he'd applied to that were reasonable to travel every day to. He seems to be enjoying it and doing well. Funnily enough most folk I speak to in the area of work he'd be looking at, went to Strathclyde so hopefully that's a good omen. DS2 really wanted to move away, he fancied Aberdeen, did the open day and really loved it. initially refused to even look at Stirling but was persuaded to go to the open day and he liked it better than he thought. In the end he only got one offer, it was his first offer and it was his favourite so he was chuffed. he seems to be loving it.

Follow their heart and their head if possible.

prettybird · 06/11/2019 23:37

Physics/Astrophysics was what ds was planning on doing (which was why he was doing AHs in Maths and Physics) before he completely changed his mind between S5 and S6 Confused Suddenly decided he wanted to do International Relations - fortunately he was already crashing Higher Modern Studies Winkand is now happily ensconced in 2nd year at Aberdeen Uni doing PIR Smile

Kids HmmConfused

Congratulations to your dd Fluffy Thanks - she must be delighted Star. I agree with Wax - there's no rush to accept the Unconditional and it's worth waiting by for more offers and then going to some of the Offer Days.

Alittewornout · 07/11/2019 07:59

Hurrah for Fluffys Dd! First offer is always a huge boost. Agree with Wax and prettybird just wait to all the offers come in there is no rush. Even though they appear dead set on one they are teens and can ( and often do change their minds!!!)
It’s true what you say ladies about the best fit for them. My Dd wasn’t keen on Glasgow uni for her course but loved Strathclyde when she did a week there in June. It hadn’t even been a consideration until then. Have to say feel somewhat relieved fluffy that your Dd has had no acknowledgement from them as neither has mine and her form was submitted 5 weeks ago. Looking forward to hearing of more offers from everyone. It’s very exciting!x

WaxOnFeckOff · 07/11/2019 16:20

I'm pretty sure that DS1 got offer from Strathclyde somewhere in the middle, Glasgow was quick, then I think it was maybe Heriot Watt, then Strathclyde, then Dundee and big long wait for Edinburgh. DS2 added Strathclyde to his application just to fill the numbers as he didn't realistically have a chance. I think they were 2nd last to come back. Aberdeen, then Dundee, then Strathclyde then Stirling x 2. DS1s strathclyde was unconditional offer and DS2 was a rejection so I din't think the outcome made much difference to the timeframe.

Alittewornout · 07/11/2019 18:23

Thanks Wax that’s a very helpful timeline. I think St Andrews will be the last response of her choices. Think they are March time so we are in it for the long haul!!x

FluffytheGoldfish · 07/11/2019 19:33

From Dd1's friends we are also expecting St Andrews to be quite late on. More news today, an email from the Physics department at Strathclyde to say they will be making an unconditional offer but it may be a while till it shows up on tracking. I'm not sure about the other universities or other departments but both Glasgow and Strathclyde Physics departments said they were not really interested in the personal statements, just grades and if there were any contextual considerations to be made.
