Sad to hear of the demise of another cornerstone of my teenage years.

Not surprised. They were in the style of a fast food outlet but not in the price bracket. They charged £6.00 - £7.50 just for a filled jacket potato. No side salad or anything! And another £2 for a drink. In contrast other fast food outlets charge about a fiver for a meal including a drink. If you wanted to spend a tenner you could go to a proper restaurant for that price.

When I ate there, around 35 years ago, ☺️ 4 of us would share 1 potato. Not great for the business but I've fond memories it.

Gosh, a 20 pence potato costs you a tenner with a drink? Not surprised they’ve gone bust. Pizza’s next, bit of dough with cheese and tomato sauce, costs pence. £10 + at Dominos.

I'll miss the one in Waverley Mall. Sorry the Princes Mall, the tuna salad over crushed buttered baked potatoes was awesome.

ClerkMaxwell · 05/08/2019 20:13

I'll miss the one in the Livingston mall (cottage cheese and chives for me) . Not surprised though as my lot moan the face off me if I suggest a spudy or worse leave me in the queue and go to McDs.

origamiunicorn · 05/08/2019 20:14

I'm not surprised either, they charged way too much for a tuna jacket which was essentially a potato with a gallon of mayo and a few flakes of tuna.

GingerKittenHuman · 05/08/2019 20:16

I used to go to go the the one in Tollcross when I was a student after a boozy night out.

Garlic butter, prawns and cheese eaten on the bus home. Happy days. Sad to hear they’ve gone.

Bananalanacake · 05/08/2019 20:17

but there's a spudulike in Westfield Stratford. has that gone too or just the ones in Scotland?

Franklymydearidontgiveadam · 05/08/2019 20:18

I'm surprised Nandos is still going. Expensive and overrated.

AwkwardSquad · 05/08/2019 20:23

There’s still the baked potato shop in Stockbridge, Edinburgh - Take It Away Spud. Been going for decades, hasn’t changed.

shiningstar2 · 05/08/2019 20:32

I used to try to persuade my grandkids in there for fast food a bit healthier than a Mcdonalds. Went down like a lead balloon. The one is Newcastle was never full...unlike Mcdonalds. Burger King, KFC and any pizza place. Didn't think the prices where any worse than Mcdonald's adult meals though. I just think people, especially kids, just don't like the healthy option...though what comfort food is better than hot potato with lashings of butter Grin

Noooooooooooooooooo!! Baked potatoes are LIFE.

Spudulike (pronounced Spi-doo-lick-ay by students) is admittedly overpriced and the tea servings heartbreakingly small but it was such a mainstay. I suppose muffins the size of your head is an odd choice of dessert to follow a potato to be fair.

I was a straight egg mayo girl. Hot potato, cold egg. Absolute bliss.

There used to be a baked potato shop on South Clerk Street called Mr Chukityleafs, anyone remember? It had a wooden rail thing in front of the filling chiller. It would probably have made more money if it had actually been open more than two days a week, which bizarrely never included a weekend.

The baked potato shop on Cockburn Street gets a mention in Bridget Jones. I used to go there every single night when I lived in Blair Street. Happy, happy days. God I love baked potatoes.

straighttalker33 · 05/08/2019 21:22

For all you Edinburgh people I recommend tempting tattie on Jeffery street. Baked potatoes are sadly underrated! I think I'm guilty of forgetting how good they are until I actually have one Hmm

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 05/08/2019 21:25

I do love a baked potato, but I was swayed by Oink. A hog roast shop is the most fantastic 'niche' fast food shop idea ever!
