Moving to Glasgow looking for primary school

Hello my husbands job is being relocated to Glasgow and we are now looking at areas to buy a house and a good primary school with pre school attached.
We currently life in a picturesque village with an outstanding primary school. I've discovered Ofsted ratings aren't in Scotland and struggling to understand how to find the best schools. I'm hoping to narrow down some schools and then search for a house. Our budget is approx £400k. I've heard killearn is nice and also Houston.
Apreciate the help x

Clarkston and Giffnock have the 2 best high schools in Scotland, Williamwood and St Ninians (catholic). I'm sure primary schools will be decent too.

Commute to Glasgow in 15/20 mins by train. Has a lovely park nearby - Rouken Glen. Housing is expensive but you will get something nice for 400K.

Broomhill primary and jordanhill primary in the west end

Not many primary schools here have pre-schools attached, so don't make that a criterion.

Killearn is nice and the primary feeds Balfron High School which has a good reputation. Balfron itself and Fintry might be a bit far out for your dh but are in beautiful countryside.

I'm assuming you're looking for a more village like environment to make the transition less of a shock.

Houston is also good - also look at Bridge of Weir. A friend lives in Kilwinning and loves it (and has a 10 year old ds and has been happy with his schooling but no idea of either which primary it is and where it feeds). Gryffe High seems to be good.

I'm not doing my usual rave/defence of schools within Glasgow City Council as I get the impression that you're looking for a village Wink - big if you want, I can start waxing enthusiastically about Shawlands and Pollokshields Grin

The equivalent of OFSTED is HMIE - but we don't have the same system of "ranking" as England (although the newspapers will try to make up their league tables).

Julesoj · 11/06/2019 09:07

Thankyou prettybird I will have a look into HMIE reports. There is so much to get my head around, buying a house is so very different.

It's not the big thing that OFSTED is - perhaps because we have fixed catchment areas and don't have to go through the rigmarole of applying for schools without knowing which one our child will get into (although we can do a placing request - but with no guarantee it will be accepted).

The other thing you need to get your head around is that you technically have a choice of schools: a catchment non-denominational school and a catchment denominational (aka Catholic) school.

Houston is lovely. Great links to Glasgow & the coast. The Primary School is excellent & Gryffe High does very well in the league tables. I've lived here most of my life & would definitely recommend it

Prettybird - just checking if you are feeling yourself ? Grin

prettybird · 11/06/2019 13:08

I know, shocking isn't it IMOGEN ? Grin

.....but I'm on standby to wax lyrically about Shawlands Academy, if requested! Wink ....and you could argue that Strathbungo is like a wee village and you have Queens Park right there and Pollok Park very close by Smile

YY with the village pond as well Grin

If you like a village feel, consider Eaglesham. Clarkston, Giffnock, Mearns etc are more suburban.

DonkeyHohtay · 12/06/2019 07:29

Killearn is indeed lovely. I know people who live there and there's lots of community stuff going on if you want to get involved. Killearn primary is good, and Balfron is good too. There's also a Montessori pre-school in the centre of the village if you're into that sort of thing.

Don't know the Houston area as well, but I do know that the schools are good, Gryffe High especially. Bridge of Weir is nice too.

It will really depend on where your DH will be based. Glasgow's not massive but the drive in from Killearn on a busy morning could easily be an hour if you hit traffic. And there;s no train - you;d have to drive to Milngavie and get a train in from there.
