If you were me, how would you get to Glasgow Uni next week?

We are off to Glasgow Uni’s Open Day next Thursday. Someone please tell me the best way to get there!

We’re in Livingston so we can either take the train through then it looks like there’s a subway stop not too far away(?) or we drive. Train is expensive and takes ages, but possibly not longer than Glasgow rush hour traffic? Driving means driving through rush hour and then finding somewhere to park all day.

I have driven to the University once before but it was the middle of the day so don’t know how horrific it might be in the morning and is actually train the easier option?

Yeah, get the train through then underground to Hillhead stop. I wouldn’t fancy your chances getting parked anywhere near the uni if you drive.

freshstartnewme · 06/06/2019 15:22

Don't rely on scotrail. They are an absolute disaster at the moment with trains regularly cancelled, missing stops to make up time or just missing altogether without warning.

thedevilinablackdress · 06/06/2019 15:23

Train to Queen Street, Subway from Buchanan Street (right beside train station) to Hillhead, cut through Ashton Lane at Hillhead, you have arrived at your destination. Parking v. tricky around the Uni.

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/06/2019 15:24

Train and underground, no question.
Dd hangs about in that area, and no way would I consider driving her in, even just dropping off.
(Dd at school in Hyndland, her Bf at Glasgow Uni but lives on the southside)

I'm giving in to this huge urge ..

"Stick in at school, hen"

(Was it Chic Murray??)

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/06/2019 15:26

It's true that Scotrail is a pain, but you'd still be better off jumping in a taxi if something goes wrong with the train.

WickedGoodDoge · 06/06/2019 15:26

How the heck are all of you seeing this thread? I can only see it if I click on the threads I’m on link.

Oh well, thanks for the advice- train it is then. freshstart don’t worry, DH commutes on the same line into Edinburgh every day so we are well aware of the hassles with ScotRail. There’s many a day when I have to go rescue him from the Ingliston P&R Grin We’ll head out early and check the trains in the morning.

I commented on the other thread but intrrtingly I noticed lots of parking spaces on campus when we were at Glasgow uni. Not sure if you are allowed to access them but guessing less staff in since term is over? We parked on campus at Aberdeen and Heriot Watt and there was no issue with that. Just never thought about doing that for Glasgow or Strathclyde or Edinburgh.

Hanab · 06/06/2019 15:32

Train And then underground .. so many restrictions parking wise in the West End ..

cdtaylornats · 06/06/2019 17:33

I would go by bus from Livingston , depending on choice its between 34 minutes & an hour and 30 to Buchanan bus station

readsalotgirl63 · 06/06/2019 19:14

Would definitely advise using train/bus from Livingstone to Queen Street or Buchanan St and then using the subway. Parking is limited around the university and there are roadworks on University Avenue.

If you really want to drive to be honest I'd park in the city centre - Concert hall car park is close to the M8 and then use the subway. The university will be very busy.

TurnTheRadioUp · 06/06/2019 19:22

Drive to one of the subway car parks and the subway to Hillhead is included in your payment.

The massive one is Shields Road, there's a smaller carpark at Kelvinbridge which is very handy for the West End. I use it quite often even if I'm not going on the subway. It's £5.40ish for a full day, which is great value considering you don't need to run back and forward to a meter and you can usually get a space.

snozzlemaid · 06/06/2019 19:39

All of the uni open days we're going to have really good travel advice on their websites and park and rides set up for these days.

WickedGoodDoge · 06/06/2019 19:43

I wasn’t aware there were park and rides for some of the subway stations. That might be the best way for us. Grin

Shields Road Subway Carpark is enormous and easy to get to from the M8 - and even easier from the M74. If you're coming over from the Livingston, follow the signposts to Carlisle/Glasgow South off the M8 onto to the M73 (but stay in the right hand lanes of the motorway) and then the M74 North. Come off at Junction 1, Tradeston - stay in right hand lane on the slip road but turn left at the traffic lights. Turn rights to next traffic lights onto Scotland Street and then turn into the car park, which is on your right. The Subway is at the far side of the multi-storey car park (but you can also park in the open bit).

14 minutes around to Hillhead - and you can take the Inner or Outer (technically the Outer is 2 minutes/one stop shorter, but it often stops for changeovers at Govan).

readsalotgirl63 · 06/06/2019 23:28

Was going to post that I've always found space at Shields Rd - and that it is vv easy to get to from M80/M74 but prettybird has beaten me to it. Enjoy your day in Glasgow

MrsMiggins37 · 07/06/2019 01:05

I’d just drive. Presumably you don’t need to travel in rush hour so traffic will be fine. You’ll get parked somewhere within a reasonable walk. If push comes to shove a lot of areas not far from the uni are all metered these days so parking is a piece of piss.

MrsMiggins37 · 07/06/2019 01:06

Park and ride is also a good shout. Shields Road is good there’s also parking at Govan across the river from the Riverside Museum.

Urbanvoltaire · 08/06/2019 01:20

Get train from livingstone direct to Partick then walk up to the university. Takes an hour. No need to change/drive/park.

WickedGoodDoge · 09/06/2019 14:49

Thanks, Urban I hadn’t thought to check to see if the direct train stopped closer to the uni which would be ideal, but having looked at the train fares, it would be about £40 for the two of us. I think I’d rather drive using pretty’s directions and then subway in.

Off to Edinburgh tomorrow which, fortunately, is far more straightforward for us. Grin

prettybird · 09/06/2019 17:10

Just to add, as you're coming off at Junction 1/Tradeston (might also be signposted Kinning Park) and turning left at the bottom of the slip road's traffic lights (but staying in right hand lane as you'll be turning right at the next traffic lights which follow in quick succession): Shields Road Subway car park is straight ahead of you. You can't miss it! Grin

Have a good day! Smile

IM0GEN · 11/06/2019 11:26

Shields road park and ride is your best bet if you want to drive.

You always get the best advice on scotsnet you know - it’s quality not quantity here Grin.

WickedGoodDoge · 13/06/2019 14:37

I have to give big thanks to @prettybird for the very detailed directions. Grin Without them, I would not have been in the right lane on the slip road and so would have been swearing when I realised I needed to be in the right lane for the right hand turn at the traffic lights. Grin

Parking at Shields worked out brilliantly well- lots of spaces and a quick subway trip to the uni. We had a great day which is quite funny because DS didn’t actually have much interest in Glasgow before we visited- he was only planning on applying to fill the 5th place with something but he loved it so much he says it’s joint first place with Edinburgh now
