Packing advice: Scotland in summer

Hi fellow Scots!

I need some advice... we live in France and this year, for the first time in 15 years, we’ll be coming back to Scotland during the summer rather than at Christmas. I need some advice on what clothes to bring for DH, myself and 2 DSs age 8 and 11. I don’t trust my memory of what it’s like! Will shorts and T-shirt’s be enough ? Or do we need to bring tracky bottoms / jeans as well? What about waterproof coats? Jumpers? Will sandals be enough? Trainers? Wellies????!

For info, we will be
In Scotland for two weeks.
Travelling hand luggage only.
Staying with my parents, so easy access to washing drying facilities
Visiting the Edinburgh, Perthshire, Aviemore

TIA

Yes to everything. Scottish weather is unpredictable, if you're lucky you'll get to use the shorts and T shirts but based on recent weather the jeans/waterproof/wellies may be needed.

Waterproofs. Definitely!
Long sleeved tops.
T-shirts.
Shorts.

Basically things you can layer from being as cool as possible (and possibly wet), to being warm (also possibly wet).

Capsule child's wardrobe for Scotland in the summer. Underwear and pjs. 2 t shirts, 1 long sleeved t shirt, 1 hoody, 1 waterproof jacket. 2 shorts, I trackies or joggers, 1 jeans. Swimwear Footwear would be trainers or mafs, sandals. Wellies or boots would depend on what you are doing in terms of activities.

Sorry, see you'd asked for yourselves too but I'd say similar with the addition of a shirt/top for adults if intending to go out somewhere for dinner.

Keep an eye on windy Wilson on twitter or Facebook for the best weather forecasts 😊

You will need everything. You could get two dry weeks of 20 degrees or more... or you could get two sodden weeks barely into double figures. Just no way of knowing. One of the frustrations of Scotland!

We live in the south and visit the north of Scotland regularly
We take the following for the kids for summer trips:
Fleece
Waterproof outer
Waterproof trousers
Long and short sleeved T-shirts (often layered if cool weather)
Some kind of jumper/hoodie
Leggings/joggers
Crops
Underwear/socks/nightwear
Swimwear
Sandals
Crocs (seaside)
Boots or wellies

We regularly do a supermarket clothes run for extras when the weather is unusually good or bad
We’ve also bought mum a heated airer so we can get everything dried more easily as 4-5 extra people swamps her usual drying capacity

Every season. I was across at Gardening Scotland in Edinburgh on Friday and wore my ski jacket with a t-shirt and cashmere jumper underneath and wasn't too hot Shock

Yesterday I was wearing a long sleeved T-shirt in the garden (Glasgow) and was too hot!

We had a visiting rugby time of youngsters from France and the weather was glorious and sunny.

Today it's back to being wet and dreich - although it feels quite muggy (haven't been outside yet).

Thanks all, it’s as I suspected from the memories I have: plaintively asking «is it a shorts and T-shirt day?» and getting an affirmative maybe four times in the whole holidays! I’ve got used to packing all the winter stuff away every year (it was 32 degrees here yesterday!) ...looks like I’ll have to dig some of it back out.I think I’m going to end up buying cheap in Scotland and getting my parents to bring things over when they visit at the end of summer. Thanks for the lists - they are really useful xx

Tbh if the last fortnight's anything to go by I'd bring wetsuit, flippers & scuba mask.
